The light position on the switch, if it's still like the 82 series, is the position just before the off position of the switch. And yes, a wire that's rubbed off its insulation on the frame or other metal part with a direct connection to ground.
 
What he said and I said in my other post. The dash harness with the idiot lights and such has tape on it from the factory, the rest has the split loom thingy stuff...
