149 Starter Generator/Charging Woes

Working on a friend's 149 did 12 v test and S/G ramps up then brakes when F terminal is energized. VR hasn't worked in years. Was told the Armature stud on the S/G should be putting out 14 or more volts, it's only putting out 3 volts. Any ideas? VR is not connected, battery new and fully charged. Grounded the field terminal and the ammeter jumps to full charge so I thing the S/G is ok. Thanks

Armature is the starter side...shouldn't be output from that with the tractor running. 14V+ from the FIELD terminal would be normal. Everything else you describe indicates the starter/generator is functioning properly. Not sure what the question is here.

Ironically, I get 3vdc from EITHER terminal to ground.

Well, I ordered the Correct, albeit Expensive Voltage Regultor off of Ebay and now she is charging just fine. A word to the wise, when I first started it up she spiked at 17 volts. I ran it for a few minutes like that, shut it off, then restarted it a few minutes later and she was at 14.7/14.8 vdc charging. All good now,

I'm going through the same thing my self with a 129. I ordered a regulator from the ebay link. Fingers crossed it fixes my problems like it fixed yours.

Unfotunately for me the new VR didn't change my problems. I will look to get my starter generator rebuilt.

I get 3v or less on the F field too. on my SG well both of my SG I tried.. tho i got 2 brand new VR both over charge i mean the Ammeter is pegged to the right.

i just last week found an old new stock starter generator online my issue now is my son replaced it for me and messed up the pulley with a puller so i need a new pulley but every where on line says discontinued or if the place says its in stock and i order it within a few hours they cancel my order saying its discontinued and they cant find another source.
anybody have an old one in decent condition they would be willing to let go of.
part # i got from international is KH-231278-S.
any ideas?

I got one off eBay a few years back for a good price. CC Specialties carries them as well. Make sure you line up the pulleys when you replace the one on the SG or your belt won’t last very long. BTDT.

Thanks for the tip PACub100, The refresh also works on my desktop when viewing the forum for the other sponsors at the top. Diggers site doesn't show up until I refresh, not that I couldn't find CCC Specialties in the past, I've spent over $600 for clutch spare parts in the last 3 months, miss the cow tails he used to include with the order though. This has always been the go-to forum for the answers to keep our cubs running and share with others.
