For a winter project, I recently purchased a 147 Cub Cadet with a "50A" International Rotory Mower on it. Earlier this week I purchased a new mower deck belt and a PTO belt from a Cub Cadet Dealer. I tried the mower deck belt and it is too small. I called him back and he verfied that he gave me a belt for a 48" deck. He also doubled checked and finally said he couldn't help because the "50A" is a International deck. Does anyone know what length belt I should be using? I am guessing it should be around 84". I am also wondering if he gave me the right PTO belt. Thanks for your help.

Gary G: The Cub Cadet Belt/Blade/PTO Reference Guide says that you should have a IH-59971-C1 Belt for a 50A deck on a 147. All belts & blades are listed in the current edition of this book, from the 1961 Original to the current showroom models. That parts counter guy you dealt with "ain't right bright". What was the part number of the belt you were sold??

Myron: The part number for the deck belt he gave me is: "489397R3". Like I said earlier, when I called him back he said it was for a 48" deck. Now I am wondering if he gave me the right belt for the PTO. I did manage to get it on the tractor/mower, but it is tight with no adjustment. The part number for that belt is IH-489399-R1. Thanks for your help!}

Gary G: IH-489397-R3 is a 75.5 inch belt. The belt I cited (IH-59971-C1) is a 78 inch belt and will allow some adjustment. Check your E-mail for other possible belts and sizes. All Cub Cadet Dealers (not box stores) have the same info I do and yours should have provided you the same information. Find a better qualified one. Most any of the sponsors( shown at the top of the page) would have known this also and could have gotten you the correct belt to begin with.
As I noted in an email, since the 147 is a Garden Tarctor and not a Lawn Tractor, posting inquires about a 147 is best done on the Cub Cadet Garden Tractor Forum page.

Myron:

A Cub Cadet dealer can have all the information in the world. The bigger issue, is knowing where it is and what to do with it. Just because a person has a Cub Cadet Uniform on and stands behind a counter, doesn't make them an expert. That is why this forum is lucky to have people like you to keep us straight.

Roland, Kraig: Thanks for the comments. I have worked behind a Cub Cadet dealer parts counter in this 21st century, so I have a pretty good feel for what a competent parts person should know. It's not that you can or should know everything, its that you must know where to look up or find the answer. All Cub Cadet dealers (not box stores) are issued complete reference materials (updated regularly) by MTD, from the 1961 Originals to the current models on the show room floor. Yes, some experience does help, but their pleading ignorance is mostly incompetence in my view.

Myron: I like how you 'tell it like it is'.

the 50a is not the original deck for that 147.They came with a 42 or 48 inch deck.It takes alot of work for the 14 hp engine to turn the blades on a 48 deck.Kinda a bad idea for IH on the 147.Especially turning the hydro unit cutting grass.So the 50 may be difficult to find a belt for,although not impossible.

I have a 1974 1250 hydrostatic cadet lawn tractor. When I turn on the mower deck, I get tremendous vibration from the system and the engine eventually dies. Without the mower deck running, the cadet runs great. Thanks for any help!!!

Bob C: The 1250 is a Cub Cadet Garden tractor. This the Cadet Lawn Tractor section.
IH Garden tractors are Cub Cadets
IH Lawn Tractors are Cadets.

Please ask your question in the Garden Tractor section.

Daniel: Your 147 is a Garden Tractor NOT a Lawn Tractor. Please post comments about it on the correct Forum page!!
