SO.. I just last month started working as a mechanic at a Simplicity dealership near my hometown.. (Simplicity, I know. But hey, those old 7115's are a tough tractor, just like our cubs. And the new ones are just as good as new cubs.. Then again, they're ALL made by MTD, aren't they?) ANYWAY, out in the trade in lot is a 109 that somebody dumped $325 into and then walked away without paying the bill when he found out it needed a camshaft.. I was bitten by the "yellow fever" bug again.. Should I just walk away, or try to see if my boss'll take a few bucks off if I trade him a not-very-complete craftsman mower? I would probably be lucky to get it down to $250.

Charles K. Go ahead and offer the $250.00 and no trade. Right now he has a tractor with money in it that isn't doing anything but sitting there. Since you're an employee that should help with your purchasing the tractor. Sell the Craftsman separately so he doesn't need to worry about selling it.

I just finally got the go ahead from dad to talk to him. I'll do it as soon as i get to work today, and (hopefully) I'll end up with a 109. (i think the final decision point was when i told dad that i would gain "valuable and much needed experience" from working on the hydrostat.)

CHARLES - Other than a hydro fluid & filter change, don't expect to spend much time working on that Sundstrand hydro. It may need some welding on the speed lever if it's really worn, the details are in the FAQ's above.

There should be a bunch of used but good camshafts for a Kohler floating around. The K241 thru K341 all take the same cam.

Pretty sure Simplicity is still owned by Briggs & Stratton, not MTD. Company I used to work at, three people had just bought brand new Simplicity riding lawn mowers just before I started there. They all mowed about as much lawn combined as I mow. They've all traded their mowers in for newer models because they were having problems and my old CC's are still running. One's 47 yrs old, one's 44, and the new one is only 32 yrs old. Yes, I have to work on them occasionally, but other than gas, grease, oil, and an occasional belt they don't cost much to keep running.

Dennis,
Thanks, man.. You actually (kind of) answered one of my questions on the main forum. (I did get the 109, paid $300 so my boss could break even.) My boss told me today that he was wrong when he told me that it needed a new camshaft. What he MEANT to say was the compression relief spring on the camshaft. (I don't remember one from my adventure into a k301 several years back, but he's been doing this for many years, and I coulda forgotten, so who am I to argue?) as for the comment about MTD, rookie mistake. they look an awful lot like some of the MTD made brands that come through, so, I assumed and was wrong. I do not claim to be an expert, just an 18 year old who was bitten by the bug.

Just curious as to why this thread continues in the sand box when it's not supposed to be here in the first place!

Oh, my bad. I had started it here so I wasn't bothering people on the main forum with "do you thik I should buy it?" questions.. Of course, it just hit me about the whole prices thing, too.. Regardless I did it more out of courtesy (and apparently stupidity) than anything.

Go right ahead and post on the main board and you'll be good to go.
That way when the next guy does it, he won't have a come back to me saying Charles did it there, LOL

LOL. Go right ahead and nuke this thread, i already have what i asked fer.

Roam around on this site, and you can find about anything you need. FAQ is an excellent place to start.
