I'd love to watch someone put a piece of tape over the hole of one of these nests. I might if I had a space suit. I just don't have the kahoonas. I call it respect.

My brother had this same thing about two years ago on an out building. He approached it after dark with a small flashlight (not good) and as soon as he put the light on the nest there were 3 right in front of him. He had spray for the job so he just sprayed at the 3 "potentials". I don't know what became of his situation but he didn't try any more.

Charlie- we're just swapping war stories. I'm sorry to be taking so long but there are several other irons in the fire as well. This is a first for me and my first attempt did nothing. I'm having issues with both vehicles at the same time as of today so that will delay the hornet slaughter a bit. When you live alone you have to do it all....alone. I might even have to drive a cub to town for parts tomorrow.

Charlie is so dang far north that the little critters are too dang cold at night to move very fast.

Wayne, Just got back from a parts run for my jeep, I'm not kidding, I saw a guy drive up on a 127, park in a spot and walk into Autozone. I almost yelled, Wayne? That was just to wierd, I didn't have my phone with me or I'd have figured out how to get that pic on here.

Dave-

That's pretty ironic; I guess it does happen. I must not be the only person Lady Luck is ignoring at present. Did you talk any cubs with him or is he just a "happen to have" type owner?

I hope to get the spray tomorrow for my unwanted guests. Both vehicles have taken the whole day to fix and I'm pooped for now.

Wayne, I was comeing back from Orilies (sp) about a block and a half from Autozone, I got stuck in traffic when I saw it.

No, the hornets haven't won....yet. I've been having some busy times and being on the backside of the house it's like one of those "out of sight, out of mind" things. I just got my second vehicle all road ready once again so it won't be long. I don't live near any decent place to get the spray so I have to plan it out.

I'll post the war and results hopefully within a week. I think they have computers in the hospital now.

FYI Wayne, My youngest brother was stung by yellow jackets when he was 18-19 Y.O. 30 + years ago & he was rushed to Emergency Room because stings had negatively affected his heart.Fast forward less than 2 weeks ago, he was doing outside cable work for cable customer & got nailed multiple times ,even under pant leg. Fortunately he had a coworker with , who drove him to emergency Room. He checked out A OK, except alot of swelling at sting sites. Then went to pharmacy for prescription to use, to give him more time get to a Doc if stung again. I haven't had that problem, must be better genes being 1st born. Good Luck !

Paul-

I hate hearing about people and the problems they have with bee stings. Many die every year from what I understand. I have never had a problem with getting stung or being allergic. It hurts like h**l but the part I hate the most is the itching for several days after. I ran over a yellowjacket nest last year. I didn't get stung the first time by but the second pass I got nailed and immediately thought yellowjacket. I hit high gear, went about forty feet away, then went back and started looking for the nest. The next night I took about a cup of raw gas and we had a big funeral with an automatic burial.

This is my first experience with baldface hornets. Just their size brings out the most in respect. Like I told Charlie, it will take a little time but I'll get them.

Later...

Wayne not sure if this was pointed out but you really need to do the KILL at night when they all are more likely to be in the nest.

They're gone!

I went out last night and finally did away with the little so-n-sos. I only found 8 bodies on the ground below the nest. I'm sure it's packed full of hornets and puke but I plan to wait and be sure before I go exploring. I've watched it today and seen zero activity. I'd like to preserve the nest for a while anyway and may just wait until winter before removing it altogether.

Thanks for all of the input!

Wayne wait till winter when its COLD and take it down . Then use a serated bread knife to cut it in half for some cool viewing of their nest and dont forget pictures

That's a good idea Jeff. I think I'll slice it lengthwise. It should be full of corpses both young and old.
