I have been reading on removing a stuck steering wheel, as mine seems to be permanently seized to the shaft of my 126. I have a bearing separator kit would that (in theory) be able to do the job without ruining the bearings?

Me personally would worry about the steering wheel more than the bearing. That is what I am normally worried about breaking.
Make up your own steering wheel puller, that is the safest.

Okay, after a week of messing with this thing off and on and a lot of PB Blaster, it will not come off. It appears that the threads on the shaft have stripped out so the nut that holds the wheel on its pretty loose when you put it on.

Is it possible to remove the steering assembly with the wheel still attached? I have a 73 that I can use for parts and I was thinking I could just remove the steering column from it and put in the 126. Of course I would have to acquire a "new" wheel if I still can't get this one off.

Steering wheel has to come off to remove the column.

A bearing separator under the hub with a puller to pry on the separator should get it off. Leave the nut threaded on flush with the end of the shaft to prevent further damage by the puller.

I've never done this so..is it possible to take lower end steering box apart and remove rings and bearings then drive shaft out of housing and up.I'm wondering if spiral gear would come off?The housing itself would not go thru dash.Other than that Matt is right use bearing separator is the only way I know..Threads can be repaired ,usually..

When other things fail I use this.

You are likely to wreck the plastic hub cover of the wheel trying to get it off if you haven't already done so.
It's a molded ass'y that surrounds the actual splined hub and the metal spokes of the wheel proper.

And you are wanting to remove it.....because??

'Permanently seized' is a good description. On my CC102 (circa 1967) the wheel would not come off. Rather than pull the whole unit off the tractor I used my saber saw to slice into the hub THREE (careful not to bother threads) times to get the steering wheel off. There was still a piece of hub left that had to be chiseled off, no kidding. There was no rust, that piece of hub was bonded to the shaft....no wonder the wheel would not come off. If you want to talk I'm glad to call you. Cheers, Jack

Having removed 100's of steering wheels, this works.

Jamocha, Did you see this post? This will work every time. No such thing as a permanently seized steering wheel unless it's been sitting under water.. in the ocean :errrr:. If you don't have an air hammer a medium sized hammer may work, but you may need help then.

In these posts there's one from Lewis...'cut it off.' In 1967, IH may have added something that bonded wheel to shaft; sitting on tractor the part I chiseled off was at 5 o'clock. The gear puller shown here would have broken. A $150 air hammer may work but I'm not buying something to use once. Again, cut it off, your saber saw will sit easily in the steering wheel. Lotsa luck, Jack
