Steve Blunier "Mr. Plow" (Central IL)
I ended up with a new trim mower this week.

Father in law has a property that needs to be maintained over the summer until they can move back from IA.....told him I could save him some serious $$$$ in paying a lawn service by doing it for him, provided I didn't have to haul my beat up old push mower over there every week. He said he'd buy a new one for me to have (and keep at his place for the summer) in exchange for the labor.....win, win.

Anyway, picked up a new self propelled 21" 3-in-1 Cub Cadet with a 160cc Honda engine. Nice little middle of the line mower, perfect for his small residential property and for trimming around my place in years to come.

Geeze, what a shame....

Blunier's "gone MTD" on us. Next thing you know he'll be giving up his Brinly for a walk behind Troy-Bilt tiller.

I take my hat off and bow my head offering a moment of silence.....

Nice unit Steve, my 8 year old Honda is a bit 'similar'. I have 600 square metres of Buffalo grass, it does a great job. Mine drives the rear wheels, does that cover on the front mean yours drives the fronts?

Art, Charlie,

Since when do push mowers count?

At least it's a Cub Cadet...the folks who keep the parts on the shelves for my 100, 149, 782#1, 782#2........and there's no Green stuff in the shed......only yellow and red....

BTW, I also have a nice Cub Cadet (MTD) edger with a 3.5hp Briggs on it out in the shed...oh, and a Yard Machines (MTD) oil drinkin' 3.75hp Briggs push mower that this new one replaces......

2 cycle stuff is all Stihl....weed eater, blower, etc.

Don't worry guys, my blood is still RED...and if I gotta buy new it's Cub Cadet

I'd let that Cub Cadet mower in my shed any day!

Steve will have a greenie in there before 2010 , he's already on the slope and it's getting slipperier every day looks like.

Heck even Kathy has a Cub Cadet trimmer !

Steve-
I've got a new (well, new 4 years ago) SC621 Cub Cadet pusher, the one with the caster front wheels. I love it! The only problem with it has been that it's factory tuned for 3000 RPM, when I put a Gator Blade on it, it just didn't make enough RPM's to "shred" the way I thought it was supposed to. It only took about an hour to remove the plastic shrouds, then the tin shrouds, exposing the govenor linkage. My SC621 now runs 3600 RPM, and seems like it has MUCH more power.

One other nice thing about the Cub Cadet mowers vs some of the lower-end mowers, no cheap deck, not a magnesium casting. I hit a piece of rebar and all it did was put a dimple in the deck (even checked the crankshaft for runout). They're tough!!!

More than anything, I wanted the Honda 5.5hp OHC/OHV engine...what a sweetheart!!!!!

I couldn't justify the casters or the extra weight for what I use a push mower for. Once it gets done mowing my FIL's small yard this summer, it will mow my ditches and corners that the 782 or DoodleBug can't reach, and occassionally bag up some extra heavy grass or collect grass for under the garden plants.

I was pleasantly surprised with the power and traction the FWD affords, mowed my ditches the other night with it (trying very hard not to work at it and get my back flared up again) and it clawed itself right along the bank with me just doing the guiding.

I'll have to put the tach on this one and see what it's turning, seems plenty strong, but these newer engines are so quiet and smooth it's hard to gauge the governor setting "by-ear" any more.
