Lots of good posts on removing the PTO clutch, but did not see any mentioning the screws. The pointed set screws for the PTO manual clutch are getting out of site in price. I did find some on McMaster-Carr, but they are not completely pointed. Has anyone used them or made their own. I am not ready to pay over $45 for 3 1/4-20 set screws. Another option I saw was pointed stainless steel set screws. Thinking of buying the almost pointed ones from McMaster and machining them to a point. Thoughts?

McMaster-Carr has the cone point ones, they are not expensive if you have multiple tractors, and CCSpecialties has them them for $4+ shipping as Charlie stated above. I don't know where you are coming up with $45 for 3 set screws. You must be looking in all the wrong places.
I kinda wondered that myself.
Maybe I am looking at the part number wrong. I was assuming quantity of 1 for $15.24 . Even that price for 3 is high to me.

I know this is an old thread, but I would like to know if anyone has successfully drilled and taped to a larger dia. set screw. I only need to do one of the three holes. For one cone point and one set screw.

Go 5/16-20, but do all 3 so you don't have uneven pressure on the casting.
Not sure but I think Digger meant 5/16-18.
Maybe 5/16-24
You guys use what ya want. I've used 5/16-20 for over 20 years with no failures!

5/16-18 is the standard 5/16" coarse thread. 5/16-24 is the standard fine thread.
5/16-20 is an odd size that is not a current standard. You won't find setscrews that size easily if at all.
Given the part is cast iron, I'd prefer coarse threads.

Where are you finding 5/16-20 setscrews? As I said...not a standard size. I'm pretty sure you mean 5/16-18...
I think a M8-1.25 would convert close to 5/16-20

The 5/16-20 tap is available from mcmaster. but I cant find the set screws anywhere. maybe Digger has a bunch.
I would go that route but it would make me purchase a new tap and a 17/64 bit. but it would be a 100% fix.

5/16-18 and be done with it. You guys are WAAYYYY overthinking this.
If your not comfortable drilling and tapping,don't take a chance on messing up.My little town,the auto parts counter people would get you a name for help
