The hot wire to the coil had a bare spot that was randomly grounding out on the block. I really appreciate everyone help sorting this out. You guys rock. Now I'm tackling the carb. Definitely going to need a metering rod.
 
May want to inspect the rest of the wire harness for issues.
At this age they seem to have deteriorated significantly.
wire strands break where they are crimped to terminals etc.

This may not be the issue but I have had issues with other equipment that the coil has power when the key is turned on but looses it when the switch is turned to crank. Old equipment old wires. Sometimes I will run a hotwire to the coil and try that.
