I seen this on another forum and thought I would start a thread for cool tools (not the 12oz. kind)

I'm afraid I'd wear it like an exoskeleton does it have a hole in the seat?

That's a "cool tool" Shultzie. If cubs were just a little higher off of the ground....

This should make for a cool thread as well. I like seeing what gearheads come up with.

Good morning, ALL. I am in the market to get a new band saw and preferably due to space a table mounted one. I'll be cutting steel up to 3/8". Any suggestions on a good new model that is around $200-$275. TIA

Marlin I'll second Sultzie. For metal fabrication you'll want a horizontal model. I've got a grizzly, when I bought it it was second cheapest, the cheapest one was not that great looking.

I have one of those cheap Delta saws. Never have been able to get it to cut straight and/or square.
It goes through blades like a kid goes through Oreos.

Shultzie,i have a band saw like yours ,that was given to me ,check the gear box under the yellow tag ,thats where thay are weak ,the gear went bad ,and the company that builds them [JET] would not sale me a new gear ,so i had to make one ,so check offten for oil ,or your out of luck ,

The thing I like about my band saw is that you can start cutting and walk away from it and it will shut off when it's done cutting. Very handy when cutting thicker pieces of steel. I'm sure all horizontal band saws do this.

Friction blade chop saws do work, but are slow, inaccurate especially cutting 3/8 thick plate and a fire hazard. I owned one before I bought my band saw. I still have the chop saw at home and rarely use it. While the bigger saw may blow the budget if you want speed and a quality cut the extra $ is worth it. The current Grizzly model G9742 very similar to my G4942
While not perfect it has been very reliable and if you buy the bimetal blade they last pretty good, I always buy a spare so when it breaks I'm good to go. But then again there's a Grizzly warehouse six block from my shop.

From what I have read, the Harbor Freight horizontal band saw is a good choice, provided you change the lube in the gearbox and put in a decent blade.

I have a ~20 year-old Delta horizontal band saw that I bought off of craigslist for $200. I had to make it a new stand since the original one was flimsy, and I've had to shim the piece being cut to get square cuts, but once I figured out the shim, it cuts square. You may check craigslist for a used saw. In that price range, a new saw is going to be hard to find.

Buy decent blades, and it will stop going through them

Only blades I have been able to find are the thin flimsy ones around here. I've tried every store around that sells that size blade, even the store where I bought the thing new. Works OK for small stuff though, Maybe I expected too much from it.

Bought a Jet 3 years ago, and it's an awesome rig.

A BIG Thank You to everyone for the suggestions. Now to save up and hopefully have one next month. I also have to start planning on a bigger Cub Cadet storage shed. I've outgrown the garage and it would be nice to have a shed that I can have enough space to move around without moving three Cub Cadets.
