We're looking to MAKE THE CHANGE for the forum and I thought I would get some ideas from you guys & gals on which format you might like to see us change to.

I'm leaning towards vBulletin, but nothing is set in stone as yet.

I'm not going to take a chance on the problem we're having right now being a precursor to a major crash!

My thought is to get another program, get it up and running and leaving the forum here as it is as a reference/archive site only.

In ref to Terrys site consideration...'100% free'
means a boat load of advertisments. As we have it now the ads are the business cards. I would be willing to pay some $ per year to keep down the 'clutter', but doubt many of the 5000+ members would be willing.
Is there some place we can look and see what vBulletin looks like ??

I much prefer the single thread format of the Main Forum here. I hate having to click to look at multiple threads like in the sandbox. The multi-thread format may have it's place but I don't care for it. I'd rather look back through the recently archived page(s) than have to daily weed through a bunch of threads on sub-topics. On the forums that I frequent that use threaded format it's easy to loose track of the threads as they drop off the first page and are quickly forgotten.

My opinion on multi-thread forums -->

To be honest, I'm in agreement with Kraig. I got my feet wet on the discus format, first with this site, and then wfm.

Allen,
You can reduce, even eliminate ads, on forumer by purchasing fbucks. A vendor section can added and controlled by admin, but I don't know if you can add banners like this site does.

I'm with Kraig...I don't like the multi-thread forums either. What we have now is much faster and easier to catch up on.

And BTW, I haven't had to log in once today, so maybe it's fixed?

Allen,
BTW, I think Only Cub Cadets uses vbulletin.

Terry R, Charlie.. Vbulletin, as used on the Only Cub Cadet site, is a photo pain in the a$$kebab... Won't get my vote... I'm with Kraig and prefer the single thread format...

Cool, looks like I have developed a following...

Charlie, I love the Single thread like kraig says, Sometimes though like for the problem Jimmy (long?) had or Frank Snerd where it was an ongoing thing that took a couple weeks to get though it. If they had a dedicated thread a person could read through the history a lot quicker than now. I do like the single thread but can see the advantage for the other style. That make it any easieer for ya Charlie.

I wonder if this has been resolved in vbulletin:

On 22 July 2010 the BBC reported that there was a serious flaw in vBulletin software that allows anyone to easily access the main administrator username and password.

Myron, good point on the photo posting being a pain. I hate having to upload a photo to a photo hosting site then link to it. If the new forum requires that photo posting setup, you can kiss my quick and frequent photo posts goodbye.

I'm not very seasoned with the different formats but certainly like this forum over any others I have viewed. Having said that, I think I'm in agreement with Kraig.

I still have to log in every page I plan to do something. I've learned that logging in at the top of the page is useless. It has to be done at the bottom.

Could this be the result of a bug caused by a disgruntled cubber from the recent past? I'd sure hate to see this site crash so Charlie, I have faith you will do the right thing. I hope you're not going crazy. I know I would.

I believe you can add "attachments" to vbulletin, or you can use an outside photo host like photobucket. One advantage to using photobucket to add photos is you can add as many to a single post as you want. Another advantage for using an outside host, is that for members who have slower internet speeds, such as dial-up, once a photo is loaded, it loads fast each and every time after that. Sites like this that uses "attached files", etc., it has to load each and every time you access that page.

You can add attachments to vbulletin forum posts, but each one must be attached individually and then inserted into the text of the post. It still takes twice as long to post pictures on one of those as it does here.

Charlie-
"We" (along with a lot of other forums) have been on this software for years now with no problems. Are we sure we want to mess with it? Are we even sure there's a problem?

I know microsoft had a "shut down and update" on my personal computer a few days back. (What are those called anyway?) Ever since then we've had these problems with log-in. It could be coincidence, or microsoft messed something up.....again. (remember VISTA??)

It's a big gamble in my opinion to switch forum software without lots of testing first, but then again they don't pay me the BIG BUCKS like they do you to make those decisions.

Kraig-
Think of it like this though... Once you've uploaded your favorite 30-50 photos to a photo-hosting site, it's just a matter of accessing those links to make the photo-help posts work.

Besides, we all know you just post that %$^&@ "perfection" thing most of the time anyway...

+1 on Kraig...

I check in every day on my laptop running Vista and no problem noticed. I like the format the way it is. Thanks Charlie
