What's up guys. New member here. Little backstory: I wanted to pick up a vintage garden tractor for the one-acre yard I have in a subdivision. I wanted it to be unique and an eye-turner. Combined with my hobby of fixing old tractors, I knew it had to be a vintage lawn mower. And of course, when you think vintage lawn mowers, you think Cub Cadet! So I picked up this 1200 from an estate sale last weekend in inop condition for 400 beans. Took me an evening to clean the points and wash out the gas tank, and now it's a running, mowing tractor. Changed the oil, topped off the transmission, and greased it up the next day, as well as washed the barn dust and grime off it. It's in no way a perfect show piece, but I think it's still a handsome example of a lawn mower from days past:

I'm hoping to get you all's opinions of it, as well as find a place I can ask questions that may come up later. In fact, I have a question relating to the serial tag. Here's a picture of it:

I was doing a bit of research into decoding it, but I can't find a "machine code" of 0058. From the material I've found, a 1200 should be 0056? Also, what's the deal with the asterisk at the end? Finally, I believe the serial number dates it to 1974?

Anyhow, I'm excited to learn more and even more excited for it to make it's debut this spring amidst the John Deeres, Craftsmans, Yard Machines, and small zero turns other folks are using in my neighborhood. I've already had one person stop by while I was unloading it!!

WELCOME! My listing for the kind codes does indeed show a 0056 for the 1200. 0058 is not on any of the kind code lists that I have seen. Are there any non-typical options on your 1200? The serial number dates it to November of 1974. The asterisk is I believe on all of the s/n tags.

Thanks! I thought it was just me not reading it right or missing some info. As for non typical options, I'm sorry to say I'm not as up on Cub options as I ought to be. It doesn't look like it though. I'd be happy to take more pics if someone lets me know what areas y'all want to see. The only "atypical" (at least in my mind) thing I saw was my transmission tunnel is cut and marked for the creeper gear, but there's no lever. My assumption was that they must have all come that way, and the lever would be there if the creeper gear was actually installed.

Appreciate the insight on the S/N - Nov. of '74 is what I got as well. Neat to have a fairly early one, then!

Welcome from Maine !
Thank you!!

Welcome. That one should get the job done.
I've no doubt it will. It was almost too easy to wake it up from its nap - it's like it was ready and willing to get back to work!

50 Years of Cub Cadet by Oscar Will III shows the 1200 as having machine code 0565, 0057 or 0058.
That'd make sense. Good thing to know. The few screenshots I found on the internet of machine codes, or "kind codes" just show 0056.... Then up to 0059. So I suppose it was implied that 57 and 58 could be 1200 codes as well.
