I'm a bit aged for "new" but, just liked this older CC I picked up.

'95 (?) 1641 I found doesn't seem to be MTD but, maybe? The 1641 just feels well built, not cheaply put together.

Grandsons 'n I are fixing the machine, frame paint, some wiring issues, deck (48" SD)cleaning, and, we plan to plow my gravel driveway when it snows.

Found a few plows on CL's locally but, don't know if the 1641 is a wide frame or narrow frame.

Arthur--let me be the first to welcome you to the forum!

This site is a great community to learn and grow in your knowledge of these awesome little yellow and white machines. There are guys on here with experience in every area of building, rebuilding, repairing, and restoring these machines. Many of them own multiple different models. If you don't get an immediate answer to a question, please be patient, usually someone will get to you soon. I must caution you though, it is easy to catch "yellow fever" as we often call it here! These tractors can be great projects with kids or grand kids in your case! Good luck with it. If you can, post pictures of your tractor. It is a tricky process at first but once you get the hang of it, it isn't too bad and we love pics on here. Make sure you check out the FAQ's section on the main page. The "frequently asked questions" will answer many questions before you ask them. It is a great resource. Also look through the various threads on this page "MTD and CCC machines". Lots of good stuff here too.

Now for your question-- the 1641 was made from 1992-1997. It is a heavy duty garden tractor and will be compatible with many of the "wide frame" attachments available in the 1980's and 1990's. Some PTO driven items though will be affected by the PTO pulley size. IH sold the line to a "secretly held MTD company" called the cub cadet corporation in 1980. So every tractor after that is technically an "MTD" tractor but thankfully the quality of the IH machines was held in the DNA of the cubs for several decades until the bean counters began to affect the quality of the machines more and more! Have fun with your new tractor, the Briggs Vanguard powering it is a very solid engine and it has a heavy duty drive train!

Josh:

Thanks for the reply. I wasn't thinkin' "lawn" tractor, definately believed "garden" tractor.

My serial number points to '95 year of manufacture. Seems right.

My only "unlikes" today are the paint, peeling terrible. And, wiring, ordered a new ignition switch from Partstree; FYI: Contacted Partstree, pricing was for three items: nut, switch, keys.

I did order the switch after chatting with Partstree. The switch price does include keys and the switch nut (duh!).

The plastic, in good shape. Is there anyway to polish the dull hood and panels?

Thanks again Josh. I'll go for a wide frame plow, I thought the frame was beefy enough. Hydraulic lift of course.

In regards to buffing the dull panels. Go to your local auto parts store and get a bottle of 3M (or like) rubbing compound and maybe a buffing attachment for a drill. Use a slow drill speed of less than 1000rpm.

Work in small 6-8 areas and keep it wet with compound until it shines. When you've done the whole panel, wash with soap and water, dry, and wax. It will look brand new.

Arthur- something I think you should check on is the front axle under your tractor. There's a taller super steer axle (which I think your tractor should have on it) which would throw off the angle on the standard WF plow. There was a plow subframe with taller front mounts to compensate for the taller axle to get the correct plow working angle. The correct subframe is a little trickier to find but you should do some digging before you spend money on a plow that you'd need to modify to get to work correctly.

Brian:

Thanks for the info, will check the axle tomorrow before I find (and purchase) the wrong one. Ouch.

And thanks Nick! Will be buffin' this coming weekend. OK so I'll supervise the grandsons, they need the work.
