I just finished my model 86 cub, and picked up a john deere model 316 tractor to work on. Man I am having trouble finding any owners or service manuals that JD wants you to pay through the nose for. It was so much easier to get cub manual I needed to fix my cub.
any help would be apreciated.Bill

Bill,
JD protects their publications and they are all copyrighted. Your best bet is too search ebay and post a wanted ad over on wfm.

Also keep in mind there were two different 316s. The first was made in 1978 and had a 16 hp K-361 Kohler on it. It was basically a 300 that was built from 1975 to 1977. Then there was the Onan powered 316 made from 1984 to 1992 - basically a non-frilled 318.

Terry Thanks for gettin back to me I have been finding out that very same thing about JD. I picked this 316 up yesterday started to check it out.Its definitely an Onan engine I have not checked out the serial# yet. Mechanically it's pretty sound has some wiring issues and some not that bad rust. mower deck needs not much work. Since finishing my DADS cub cadet 86 a couple weeks ago I was looking for something else to tackle. Bill

Bill,
If you haven't already, go to www.weekendfreedommachines.com - it's the JD equivalent to this site. Be aware they use the same software as this site, so they're having the same logging in issue we're having here.

When there, post in either the Vintage Forum or the Restoration & Repair forums, not the Late Model Forum. A few people make that mistake.

I like to have a 300 series JD, or better yet, a JD 455.

i just bought a cub manual for the 147. i bought online in pdf, cost me 11 bucks. i bought my service manual for my '71 john deere 112 and the damn thing cost me around 65 bucks on cd. i had to purchase it from a dealer, at the time i was just glad it was still avialable. these publications are nice to have. now i have 1 for the deere and one for the IH, seems like they are more expensive for deere. allot of the material for both tractors is nearly the same. information on the kohler k series doesnt change as per the equipment it is installed on. steering, electrical, drivetrain, frames, pto's all have there differences.

Andrew,
They're cheaper for the IH Cub Cadets because you can find them for free on a couple of sites. If you bought one online, it might be one that the guy downloaded from a site and printed it. You can't do that with JD's publications as they're not available in downloadable formats from the net, unless someone bought the manual, scanned it and then are selling it. Which violates JD's copyright laws and JD will legally go after someone who does that.

JD isn't the only company that will - there are laws and regulations set up by the federal government protecting companies' intellectual properties and trade secrets. Federal fines, civil penalties and imprisonment can be the punishment for violating companies copyright laws.

Andrew, You will find that anything for a greenie is more expensive. You are paying for the name. That's why I got rid of my green stuff. Just my .02

Actually that's not true. You will find that most of these parts for any brand can be expensive. That's one of the myths that circulates around the 'net that just isn't true. I have owned Wheel Horses, JDs, CCs and find that prices are pretty much the same.

Terry-

I'm inclied to agree with Melody. There's a green store in every town and they do charge rediculous prices period. I don't know about the other brands like WH, etc. I own a couple of green tractors but they are on their way out. They are also harder to work on IMHO. Things are just not as accessible. I'm sure there are many "Martians" that would disagree though.
