Hi Guys, I just recently joined up with you after reading thru your posts for about a year now. I have several super garden tractors and have recently purchased a model 1572 diesel. It needs a little TLC but the worst item on it is the driveshaft. It has some kind of a clutch on the back of it where it attaches to the hydro pump. This seems to be worn quite abit and has knocked out the oil seal in the hydro pump. I have talked to the parts man at the IH dealer and he says that there isn't much of it that is available from IH anymore. Is it possible to swap out this driveshaft for a regular type from another super garden tractor? Or should I just try and rebuild the original one? I seem to remember reading a statement from someone that did this but cannot find anything about it in the archives. }}

Charles,

That clutch is a centrifugal clutch designed to help the diesel crank faster in cold weather. It allows the engine to crank without turning the hydrostatic pump. It was not used on later diesels, such as my 1782.

You can eliminate the clutch by using a straight drive shaft from a 1772 available through one of our sponsors listed above, or you local CC dealer. If you choose , you can make one using 4140 grade steel.

I believe that your dealer was correct, those clutch parts are a bit pricy IF you can find them. That was an example of a great idea not realizing it's potential due to an inferior design, so it probably isn't work the repair.

Charles,

If you plan to have a fair amount of seat time in this little diesel tractor, I highly suggest swapping out that old "rag-joint" drive shaft for one of the "Cyclops" model CV drive shafts. I just completed the exchange on mine and I was amazed at how much smoother it runs from idle through WOT. I notice it the most at mid to higher RPM's. When you compare the two drive shaft units side by side it isn't hard to see why the CV joint model is so much smoother (better). There are many more flex points in the old setup and with the amount of torque and vibration coming from that little Kubota diesel, the old design just didn't have a chance over time. Good idea, bad design.

Camden: The term "Cyclops" is used to describe the MTD vintage tractors that featured a distinctive "integrated" headlight at the center of the grill. You may have seen pictures of them, the units are generally considered to have carried on the tradition of IH quality and introduced some helpful innovations, like an axle design with a tighter turning radius (the so-called "Super-Steer" axle). Below is a diagram of a "cyclops" Super GT Model 2086 hood:

The Model 2086 also has the CV axle design that Joshua references:

Jeremiah--Thanks as always for the detailed description and diagrams for the CV driveshaft. You do a great job of making these things easy to understand.

Camden--Welcome to the forum!

I installed the CV joint drive shaft on my 1772 nearly two years ago and have been very pleased with the results. If you look up Donald Tanners "dog rebuild" thread in this section, you will find a detailed description of what he did to retrofit one for his 1572 including many pictures.

Thanks for the clarification of "cyclops" It makes sense now. I will definetly check out Mr. Tanners thread. Thanks guys

I finally got the adventure done! The driveshaft is back in and all is well once again. I'm gonna mow one last time then the blade will go back on. thanks for all the help, Cam
