IH Cub Cadet 107 "build"

Howdy,

I recently purchased a 1969 Cub Cadet 107 off Craigslist. The goal is to restore the tractor while adding functionality, mainly snowplowing this coming MN winter.

The mower came with non-standard ATV tires, and a 42" mower deck.

So far I have:

• driven it around the block
• removed the mower deck
• removed the mule drive
• gathered PDF parts/owners/service manuals for tractor and engine
• ordered original manuals for the tractor and engine
• purchased 42" snow blade

Next steps:

• change hydro fluid (need to order some hy-tran)
• change the oil
• change the gas
• change the spark plug
• check compression
• acquire and mount new "stock" tires (got a lead on a set, checking them out tomorrow)
• mount rear "lift lever" (on order)
• mount rear tail lights (on order)
• acquire and mount head lights

The last 2 bullets might offend purists -- the 107 did not come with lights as an options as far as I can tell, and I cannot find any compatible CC original lighting parts. I did, however, find a set online made by the same manufacturer of the original tail lights, and at the same dimensions it seems. For $7/each I couldn't pass it up. As for the headlights, I am torn between fabricating my own front plate, or purchasing one for another model that would fit my tractor. found one online for $62, but I could but a cheap sheet metal brake for less than that...

Looking forward to feedback! I am brand new to restoring tractors, but not new to working on engines, welding, wiring, etc.

taking her home. trailer was rear-heavy which made me nervous, but i took it slow and it worked out. going to modify the fenders a bit and should be able to haul it with the mower deck off no problem.

some loose parts in the cargo box under the seat. any idea what these parts are for? I was thinking the yellow plate might be something that goes along/around the driveline based on the rounded notch.


beefy rear end with the ATV tires. one of the previous owners' sons apparently backed into a tree, causing the unfortunate damage on the left rear end. it still clears the tires, but just barely.

pile 'o parts. mower deck needs some welding done, and i will probably use it for testing of the rattle cans i picked up (more on that in another post).

pics of plow (retrieval) day. it is missing the arm and bracket to adjust height, so I'll probably fabricate something basic for now in order to be ready whenever snow flies here in MN.

The yellow plate is a decorative cover that goes on the rearend. I also see a tiller belt guide. Not sure what the smaller pieces are.

Looks like you already know what you are doing so I just want to encourage you to do it right the first time, and to buy original parts. In my haste I have skipped important frame work, parts, and painting on more than one rebuild. I now have at least two CC’s that are complete rebuilds but one is half painted with leaking creeper (122) and the other has a cracked frame (169). All because I didn’t want to wait. And when all is said and done you will be glad you bought original parts because it will look like it should. Others will recognize the work as well! My $.02.

I was advised to start my own restoration thread in which to post progress (or lack of) in the refurb and restoration section of the forum. That way folks that are interested can zero ion on what's going on as you post.

It looks like you have "good bones " there to start with!!

You might consider a trip to Huron, SDS next June for Red Power Round up. There are lots of Cub Cadets that make that trip and also there are many shows throughout the summer in MN that have GT sections. One in Hastings around Labor Day had dozens on display this year and I am considering bringing equipment there next years as well.

Also keep an eye out for the MN IHCC chapter state show next year as well, lots of Cubs turn up there as well.

One of my goals with this project is to bring my tractor to a show some day.

I went to The Nowthen Threshing show this year and it had a small section of GTs as well as tons of other awesome tractors, steam engines, etc. My step-brother and his wife live out near Hastings and mentioned the show out there is pretty big, I am hoping to check that show out next year as well. The state fair even had a beautifully restored CC as a 4H project in one of the buildings.

Definitely going to check out the MN IHCC chapter as well, thanks for all the info!

This is my first tractor or restoration project, so your advice is very appreciated!

I am striving for as original as possible, but if I do make concessions I am hoping they would only need to be in non-permanent/fixed places such as the headlights which I could swap back to the original plate for shows. I am on the hunt for some true Hy-Tran fluid as well as a CC brand filter and spray paint if possible. I am planning to call my "local" Case/IH dealer today.

You're not wrong! Fortunately my wife is onboard with the project (so far!).

I do plan to use it to move snow this winter which I hope saves some time. I have a medium amount of driveway, parking area, and patio in my little tiny city lot.

I will likely offer to help various elderly neighbors because I suspect I will enjoy my time on the tractor anyway

On the cub 149's your "cargo box" is where the battery goes, could the U bracket with eyes be a battery hold down bracket?

Keep your eyes open for original 26 pound IH wheel weights; about $150 for a pair. I have one inside and two outside each rear wheel.
