Is changing the hydro fluid and filter likely to smooth out the hydro drive? Seems just a little jumpy.
Looks like the back case cover needs to be opened to drain?

Skip, what model Cub Cadet? How old is the fluid and filter? Does it speed up going down hill and slow down going up hill? It's possible that it has a worn trunion slot. Have a look at these entries in the Cub Cadet FAQ:

I've been moving threads left and right, I haven't given up just yet...

I'm going to guess Skip has a 1650, as he has a thread in the correct area with that model, so, I'm moving this to the IH Cub Cadet Tractor thread.

Haven’t noticed the uphill/downhill speed issues. Being it’s new to me, just thought hydro oil, filter, engine oil and new carb might be a good place to start? I had mentioned that I don’t think it’s had a lot of tlc from the previous owner?

Welcome, Skip. Yes, you open the the rear end cover to drain the fluid. That said, I'm guessing the jerking is due more to weak damper springs and worn slots on the hydro linkage. Look at the FAQs for good info on fixing the slots. New springs are available from forum sponsor, Cub Cadet Specialties (click the button at the top of the page).

The FAQs also have good information on repairing/modifying the engine mounting rails and rubber isolation (iso) mounts. There's a good possibility your motor is loose and rocks side to side if the rubber mounts are shot. None of this stuff is particularly difficult to fix, but it gives you a great opportunity to become very familiar with your tractor! (I'm currently working on a 1650, and I've done both the mods/repairs I've mentioned.)
