I’m going with this theory on a piece of crud. It restarted this am and I drove it back across the street. Cleaned plug which wasn’t bad at all. Ran great the rest of the day! It’s getting a rebuild as soon as I can get the money for one.Sounds like it has some compression ruling out a broken rod. Probably some junk in the carb or fuel system, or defective points. Could also be fouled spark plug.

You are correct. After 40 years, is a full rebuild really out of line? That said, I’m doing the standard LOF this week including hydroHe implied he was waiting until he had the money for one. I get that for a $300-$1k engine rebuild. Not a $13 carb kit. One who cannot afford a $13 carb kit should probably find a different hobby.
