I believe the purpose of that steel ball is to make sure there is perfect alignment of the ends of the two shafts. This would eliminate or reduce vibration from misalignment which will lead to premature bearing failure of the hydrostatic pump as there are centered matching dimples in the end of each shaft.

I removed the front rag joint and the shaft went in like it was meant to, steel ball and all. I really appreciate the help.
