Does anyone know why some S/G have bearings on the tail end and some have bushings? Mine has a bushing, I can't see how it comes out. I wonder I'm I can replace it with a bearing end cap?

Upgrade NowI need to replace my bushing but it will destroy the wick filled oil cap thats before the bushing. I have yet to see a replacement for it.Early S/G's came with a ball bearing in the tail end cap as that is what was used back then in the early 60's. While it worked okay, over time the heat and brush filings would cause the tail bearing to fail which often caused damage to the armature and other internal components that required replacement. The SG's were improved via a design change starting with the 1X6/7 series (if I recall correctly) where the SG end cap was changed to use an oil coated bushing pressed into the tail cap and an oil wick helped keep the bushing lubricated. This was a great improvement and essentially eliminated bearing failures on the tail end. However, the front cap still had a bearing, but they weren't as problematic as the tail end bearings. There was also likely a cost savings associated with the change as well.
Thanks. Will contact himCharlie ( CC Specialty) has a early style end cap that has a bearing---not bushing. Direct replacement for bushing style. Bearings are all sealed now which eliminates the dirt problem with the very early units. Bearing units now live forever---well almost.
