My son just bought a 100 that has been modified with an older Kohler 14hp motor, not sure what model. I'm no expert! He plans on pulling it.

The carburetor has a fuel mixture screw, idle screw, and a third screw in the back i'm not sure whats for. I have the idle screw turned all the way down and it still runs high. When I turn the third screw in it begins to idle down, but then immediately stalls.

What do I do??

Please help!

Thank you!

Welcome!

Seeing as it has a 14hp (I assume it's a K321) I will link you to a service manual for a Cub Cadet that has a 14hp Kohler (the model 147 has a 14hp.) Click the link then scroll down to page 29 of 155 (page number states 1-24) the carburetor adjustment settings continues onto page 30 (1-25). Start there and try the suggested settings. If it still runs high the governor might need adjusting. The pages for that start on page 33 (1-28).

Since Christmas I bought a 70/100 with a bad governor. The gear was off its shaft and laying on its side under the camshaft when I got the sump off. About $150 in parts and 4 hours and now it idles pretty well. Hindsight and my ears say I should have mic'd the crank while it was out.

Does the governor control the engine speed at all? the only thing that kept the K241 from running away was if you closed the hand throttle fully the spring would push on the governor arm and force the throttle plate closed.

Also, the only third screw I can think if is the idle speed screw and it is either mounted on the throttle shaft and contacts a stop on the carburetor, or is mounted on the carburetor and contacts a stop on the throttle shaft. If its screwed too far in, the engine will not idle. It determines how much the throttle plate can close. If the throttle plate closes too much it will cut off all the air and then the engine will stop.

My last thought is how badly worn is the throttle shaft? If its getting air by the throttle shaft bore it probably will never idle very well.

Another thing I have seen on other make engines is the throttle plate mount screws backing out and then there was no control over the throttle plate position.

Welcome! You leaned out the idle mixture, then possibly leaned out a high speed adjustment screw (my best guess without looking in a manual). Check float height, needle and seat for function. Might be over fueling. Honestly it could be a multitude of issues, like mentioned previously, run through the troubleshooting punch list.
