Unless it is so worn it will not hold the seal in anymore, I'd replace the bearings, races, and seals, and run it.

The slop is worn or improperly shimmed bearings...nothing to do with the housing.

Oh really?
It did still hold the oil seal. But the washer was worn down to 1/4 its normal diamater (I didn't measure but it stood out).
I can try the original plan of just new bearings. It would get me going for the season so I can find replacement parts later.

Update: mowed yesterday for 2hrs, and I hear a hum! :)

This experience gave me an excuse to dissassemble & rebuild the spindles. New bearings, cones/races, grease, belts, mule drive spring, etc. And last but not least: torqued up nuts to Service Manual's spec. Last year, the deck sounded more like a roar than fans humming. So this bad/scarey experience turned into something good.
Thx Matt & everyone :beer_chug:

I am fortunate with where I live... We still have an old school auto parts store with employees who know what you need and are talking about... Unlike the chains.. I rebuilt the deck on my 102 a few years back with new Timken bearings and races as well as CR seals and my over the counter cost was about $25.00 a spindle.. Shop the mom and pop stores.. They know thier stuff..

Justin, where are you at in WI? I was out in the shed today cleaning and I have a bucket full of spindle parts. I could probably just send you want you need if you still need any parts.

In Algoma so the other side of the state but I do get to your side (was just there last month). I'll message you.
