Canton to blow historic steam whistle 3 times daily
Associated Press

There are plans in Canton to blow the former International Harvester steam whistle three times daily.

International Harvester closed more than 30 years ago and burned in 1997. Someone saved the steam whistle while the building burned.

The (Canton) Daily Ledger reports (http://bit.ly/1AIEbUi ) that the piece of Canton history was dedicated on Monday. It will be blown at 8 a.m. 12 p.m. and 5 p.m. daily from the top of the Cook Polymer Technology facility. The whistle previously was on top of the Canton City Building and Canton Police Department.

Canton Mayor Jeff Fritz read a proclamation designating Big Toot Day as a tribute to those who once worked at International Harvester.

I hauled tillage equipment from the Canton Plant in the early '70s when I worked at Brooklyn,WI IH dealer.

I go by that locale in McHenry several times a week. Never realized it was a former IH location until I read this thread, although my Dad had said there was an IH dealer along this strip. There is a brick building with a large window storefront along the creek a few doors down from the IH building that I had thought could have been it, before I read this thread. Right now it's a small engine/Ariens dealer.

Dad worked at an IH dealer for 12 years after high school. Started in Parts, ended up in Service. He grew up on a farm here that used IH equipment.

Thought he said we had IH here in Spring Grove waaaay back in the day. Definitely Allis-Chalmers and Chevrolet. Talking 1940s & earlier most likely.

Brian/Jeff,
I know exactly where this building is located in fact I think I posted a picture of it many moons ago. Brian, you a definitely will notice the "IH Pylon" on the building.

Tom, I Remembered your original picture and our conversation, thought it was neat to get an old aerial pic, I use Historic Aerial website
