I wonder if part of the problem with the balance gears "grenading" is the reuse of the snap ring retainers. My machines at work use similar snap rings, and I find that they get stretched out if you spread them too wide in order to remove them. Just a theory, but I would like to hear some experiences of people who work with those motors everyday to see if they ever have problems with the gears on motors that haven't been opened up since they were originally built. Do original factory-built motors have this problem, or is it mainly a problem with motors that have been rebuilt?

Kendell, remember my post of May 3? When I got my 147 the engine was very noisey compared to my 126,by using a mechanics stethoscope (a long screwdriver) and listening to the engine at various locations it was pretty obvious that the noise was coming from the balance gear area of the crankcase. Play around with eng rpm while you are listening, it makes a difference, the balance gear noise is kind of a knock/rattle sort of like piston slap. After hearing it in my 147 I discovered I could hear it in my 126 also, but not nearly as loud. When I tore down the 147 ,the gears were very loose on the shafts, when I tore down the 126 they weren't nearly as loose. So if you hear a noise in the gear area it's decision time.
