On the timing question... I read that all the K motors except the K341 AQS use a fixed 20 degree BTDC for the timing "fire" position. Has anyone ever measured/recorded what works out to be for the piston location in inches below a bare block deck on the compression upstroke? Where I've had that dimension on small engines, I've found timing marks to be off more than once..
On operating engine speed, I think Dennis and I had a discussion on that once in relation to lubrication. A plain shell bearing (or plain bearing without a shell like the K motor rods) relies on the shaft rotation inside of the bearing to carry/push a wall of oil that is the actual cushion between the shaft and the bearing. I think of it as the crest of the wave that a surfer rides. Too slow a rotation will not build that cushion. My dad used to like to run his little rider around at slow speed, but I was told that you should run small engines under load a far way above idle, although WOT isn't a necessity. I know I broke the crank on one hot Cushman lugging it down too far going up a hill - there was some evidence that the rod insert might have stuck on that one, although the crank broke on the rod throw...
