First day of big game/ deer season here in NY, and its pouring rain! I got soaked within the first hour of being out. Put all my stuff in the dryer. I'll go back out this afternoon when it hopefully stops raining.

Nice woodies Bobbie, me and my cousin killed out on green winged teal opening morning and had one shoveler hen to boot. Headin' back in the holler in a few to see if the bucks are running. Then duck hunting in the a.m.

Opening Day for gun hunting in MD. on Saturday.
I didn't hunt this year so we had the party at our house.

Every year someone has an Opening Day party.
We butchered 7 deer this year. Lots of food <font size="-2">and a small amount of adult beverages.</font>

Brian, nice buck!

My daughter and I didn't see a single deer while hunting!

I guess we should have hunted at the farm instead of 100+ miles north at the cabin. I talked with someone at the registration station up by our cabin and they told me deer registrations were way down this year at their location. We had 8 people in our hunting party, one guy jumped a small buck but was not able to get a shot and another had a shot at a doe and missed. No one else saw any deer. I had trail cameras up for a few weeks back in late September and early October and only got a couple photos of antler-less deer, no bucks. I put the cameras back up a week before the opener and got one photo of a small buck and one photo of a doe. I think next year I'll pass on buying a deer hunting license, leave the big rifle in the safe and just go sit in the woods with a .22, at least there are plenty of these in the woods.

Brian, in Wisconsin you need a license even if you are hunting on your own land. On the family farm this fall I put in a food plot. (CLICK HERE <font size="-2">for details on my food plot, along with a bunch of the photos from the trail cameras</font>) I also set up several trail cameras and had a bunch of bucks come in. The problem is Wisconsin thinks there are too many deer and to force people to shoot does (aka: antler-less deer) they have what they call the Earn-A-Buck (EAB) program where you have to shoot an antler-less deer to earn a tag for a buck. I set the cameras up in early August I've gotten hundreds of photos of bucks but didn't get a single photo of a doe until late October, and by then the bucks all but disappeared. I have yet to even bow hunt because the same EAB rules apply for bow hunting. The area up north at our cabin does not have the EAB program however there are not as many deer up there. Also Wisconsin has several Antler-less hunts, the first being in mid October and it sends the deer, mainly the bucks, into hiding as that was when they stopped showing up on my trail cameras.

In NY we can have to have a license, depending on what you spend on your license depends on if you get a doe tag or not. The first one comes with what NY calls a "Sportsman" and if you qualify and they are available in your area you can get 2. I live in a part of NY where 4 ares corner each other so I usually get 2, 1 in a different area than the first. Farmers and landownwers with alot of land can apply for a nuisance permit which allows them to kill up to 20 deer of either sex. During muzzleloader and bow seasons you get a buck tag and another either sex tag. I got a doe on the 4th day, there are a ton of deer around here, but there arent many hunters, so nothing is moving. Weather has been screwy too which hasnt helped things, nothing is moving and there is alot of heavy cover. I cant help but wonder how many deer I've walked by and not even known they were there!

Too excited not to post this one. Been hinting for 23 years and this is only my second buck. A bunch of does here and there but this one definitely makes me proud. Nick

Went out fishing on the Chesapeke yesterday. Calm day on the water but chilly (in the 20's).
<font size="-2">I know that you northern guys are out in shorts & t-shirt when it's in the 20's, but in Maryland that's cold!</font>

Caught some nice ones.

You're allowed 2 fish over 18", but one of them has to be under 28". Couldn't catch any short ones. I'm not complainin' tho!

Five fish from 35 to 41 inches.
