Lucas and Jeff, if I understand youu right, the stud, or screw post that pokes out of the S/G is damaged and you need to repair it? Well, if so, what I did was took the S/G apart. Then took the old post out by unscrewing the nut. Basically the post is just a bolt sticking through the body. On the inside of the housing, I used a soldering gun and removed the post from the wiring. Then I replaced the damaged post with a new bolt of the same size. I soldered the new bolt to the same wiring. There was an insulator to insulate the stud from the body. I pushed the newly soldered bolt, with insulator, through the body, and screwed on a new nut. Put the whole thing back together, and you're back in business.

LUCAS - I replaced a stripped S/G stud years ago. A good CC dealer or automotive starter/alternator rebuild shop should have the parts. I'd also replace the plastic insulator bushing the stud goes thru also. You need a REALLY big soldering iron to reattach the wire to the inside of the stud but other than that it's just nuts & bolts, and clean stuff as you pull it apart.

If you have a starter/alternator rebuilder in your area the repair should be less than the cost of a soldering iron big enough to do the repair, might be the way to approach it. I seem to remember the wire I had to solder was about 10-12 ga solid wire and it was actually more than my 80W iron would handle. I have a BIG Weller gun that's 240/320W but I hardly ever use it anymore. It's soldered WAY too many R/C car battery packs together.

TERRY R. - Yep, we tried to keep the conversation light and informative while you were gone... And slightly on-topic.

I bought a rockshaft from a 782 to install on my 682. The guy shipped it with a section of the frame attached. I have to remove it. It looks like there are two roll pins with steel collars swedged on. Is that what it is? When re-installing, where do I get the collars?

Thanks,

Norm

Norm, I just looked at a 782 and 682 rockshaft and they look like two different parts. Is what you got what you need? The sponsors above can get just about anything you need.
Hang in there for a few hours while other members comment on your situation.

Norm-

How about a picture of your new rockshaft so we can see what you're dealing with? I bought one once that was removed by that 'lazy' way too...it was cheap but I had to put it in the stove to loosen the rust and then put it in a hydraulic press to pop it apart.

Dennis/Jeff-

My dad brazed a new stud onto one of the field coils once and that worked great. They guys at the repair shop said if they are soldered on the solder may melt if the tractor is cranked for a long time without it starting.

Yes, it's what I need to convert my 682 to a 782. I'm just trying to understand how this rockshaft is put together so I can re-assemble it back in the 682.

Okay, here goes...

You're lucky you've got the one that's relatively easy to take apart. The later CCC ones are really hard to get apart.

All you need to do is remove the spirol pin that holds each arm onto the rockshaft, and then slide the arms off.

Sounds simple enough. Do you think that one of the sponsers have these replacement pins?
