1650 Snowthrower Question. I just purchased a '79 Cub Cadet with tiller/mower/snowthrower. My question is that the snowthrower only rises of the ground a couple of inches, is this normal? Or did the original owner hook it up wrong or have the wrong thrower.

Marty G I think that black starter/generators were earlier than the wideframe tractors. I know my 147 came with a black one. That said you have a fine looking 128. I have a 128 that all the mechanical stuff is fixed. I just need to tear it down and repaint it.

Did get some seat time in today.loaders come in handy. Got a blower here to repair, but i`am going to see if it will fit my 1512... LOL Later Don T

Matt S.,

I think I remember reading something on here about some mounting arms installed upside down, or something like that will not let the thrower lift all the way up. I'm sure somebody will chime in on this.

Gettin' ready for the snow. Lucked out with great weather to make the conversion. Off came the deck, added some lube and gave it a wash. The snow blade did, in fact, quick-attach and I was able to wrestle the chains on without breaking a sweat. I'm gonna add bungee cords to keep the chains tight. In years past, it's been 25 degrees and 3" of snow already and a big PITA to do. Bring on the snow!

Kendal H.,
The book "Original Farmall Cub and Cub Cadet" written by Kenneth Updike, on page 90 down in the left bottom note says: "The 1x8 and 1x9 series were the first Cub Cadets to use black-painted starter/generators."
I'm sure Kenneth knows alot about Cubs, since he has written several books, but I have found some questionable info in this book too. I'm not saying he is wrong, but there are a few things I have to question.
Anyway, that is where I got the info on the starter/generator.
Is there any possibility the starter/generator could have been replaced during the tractor's lifetime?

There were black generators on at least some of the 1x6/1x7 series machines. My dad has a 127 that he bought new with the original black starter on it.

According to some of the brochures, some were black. At least in the pictures.

I'll betcha Paul or Myron will tell us for sure though.

Digger,
To my knowledge, the black starter/generators were first used on the wide frame tractors. Prior to that IH bought the S/G from Kohler and it came installed on the engine. IH painted the engine and the S/G along with it. IH finally figured they could buy the S/G directly from Delco for less than what it cost them buying from Kohler, and at that time started installing the black S/D on the engine after it was painted. Since the yellow S/G's were painted with the engine before it was installed, if that S/G was replaced for any reason after the tractor was sold, a replacement from IH would have been black. I would think any of the 1x6/7 series tractors that have a black S/G have either had the S/G replaced or were built very late in the production run, just prior to production beginning on the 1x8/9 tractors, and were equiped with the "new" Delco supplied S/G. Myron may have some "paper" that list a S/N break for the S/G change.

I'll add to the confusion.....

Here's a 147 I owned a few years back. The black S/G appeared to be original to the tractor.

On the flip side of that coin, here's a factory IH calendar from 1970. It clearly shows a yellow S/G...

181784.jpg

But.......

We all know it's not REALLY a 147, because there's no "bulge" in the frame where IH put the extra two HP.

While we're at it, some other oddities about that tractor....

A gear-drive with a Hydrostatic hood decal??

And, a manual-lift handle with an (air-brushed in) electric lift assembly.

Art,
The color of the lift is way off from the rest of the machine too.
Maybe they used the Pre Beta version of Photoshop back then.

Under Edit,
Just curious as to why your lookin between that guys legs in the first place!

Charlie-
Since you're sitting up there in the BIG CHAIR, it may look like "between" his legs to you, but from my vantage point it's definately under his leg.

Definately!!!! LOL!

Finally took a picture of my new to me 129 that followed Me home the other day. $150.00 and it has a decent deck . The PO quit using it after the PTO went out of it. Cleaned out the carb and gas tank, put in a new battery and replaced the coil.
After adjusting the governor finally got it running pretty decent. It has a clicking noise that i haven't tracked down yet, I think it might be a S\G bracket bolt that maybe coming into contact with the big pulley behind the PTO. There is just a hair width of clearance when not running.

They didn't do a very good job of writing in the word Hydrostatic either.
Of course they didn't think that 40+ years down the road, we would be blowing up the pics 5 times normal size either.

Well, i put out the christmas lights outside on the bushes and stuff, and decided that i'd put some around my trusty old 124, and my old 127. I thought about puttin them on the original, but i prize that thing, so it stays in the shed.

Pretty cool thing today happened. Went down past my old house, and it's for sale. My very first cub cadet, a 147, i had there, and we parked it in the garage when we moved, so we could sell it with the house. Well, i stopped and took a peek through the mess of weeds, and there she still was. Been sittin for 10 years untouched. Im gonna go get it before it dissapears.

Well fellas, good news. Just got off the phone with a buddy of mine, and were goin down to get back my 147 tomorrow. Im storin it at his house, until i can make room, and first get it to run again. He'll probally make a crazy photo design for me, but at least the 147's in the picture. Photo to come tomorrow or monday.
