Jerry: Ask your wife if she wants to go check out some yard sales, you never know what will happen. . . . maybe you can find a parts tractor along the way.

I'm going to have to split my 'O' to repair the frame. How do you remove the creeper from the input shaft on the transmission?

I just prove the saying true!

ok boys and girls. my 301 still sounds like some one's hitting it with a hammer but it's not constant. it's not present at idle but its real bad at mid throttle and a little less wide open. with about 5 hours on a rebuild i tore the eingine down completely and could not find a single mark inside anyplace. camshaft has 3,000 endplay, crank has 8,000 new rings, piston, rod, if the rod was lose or not close enough would'nt it leave some sign of damage on the crank pin? it's not a constant noise like a loose rod but more of a rattle but it's pretty loud. sounds like somthing is hitting the block. it's hard to tell but standing over it, it sounds like it's on the pto side. I've never heard a kohler sound like this. any ideas would be great because other then just runing it untill it blows i'm out of ideas.

Can anyone tell me if old dash tin can be re-screened to establish the original look? If so, is there a vendor who can provide this service?

Jesse, You have the oil hole in the rod cap faceing the cam right? Both clips on the wrist pin? Marks on the rod right? Hell did you check the ACR for proper operation when you had it apart this last time? I'm not messing with you and nobodys gonna laugh.

hi Dave. this is gettin' funny but their ain't nobody laughin' lol. yup oil hole is facing the cam, all the clips are there, like i said i tore this thing copletely appart looking to see what had been knocking and nothing has any wear marks. I'm about to beat my head against the wall but i would only ruin the wall. I'm diging threw the archives to see if some one tried somthing i did'nt. oh and no pto,no balance gears. i've tried the old screwdriver to my ear trick and still can't find the noise. only a real light grey in the oil from breaking in. no pieces or shardes of metal in the oil either. i just can't imagine what's making this noise. noise it's there cold or hot. but it will quit when i'm pulling a load or driving up hill. engine has no hesitaion, backfire, and starts right up with only a few turns of the engine. Theres gotta be somthing i'm missing somewhere. thanks for all the help and advice from everyone.

Jesse,
Check for a loose starter generator pulley (the one on the crank, not on the SG) or loose flywheel.

Jesse J.-

Forgive me if this has already been covered and I missed it, but what model of tractor is this on? If it's a gear drive, you might be hearing a clutch rattle. Also, was the engine bored oversize, or did you just hone it and install a new standard piston? If the latter, and the bore was close to the wear limit, it might be piston slap.

thanks for your ideas guys. the tractor is a 71. the p.o. had a shop bore and turn the crank before i got it. the story is i bought 3 cubs just to get the 71 a few years ago. one of the cubs was a 104 with a nice window in the block. all 3 engines had been rebuilt by the same shop. since one tossed a rod the last owner never installed the the other 2 engines. so i tore them appart to make shure everything was correct. what a mess i found inside. some kind of grey paste like antisize was all over everything thick enough i needed a puddy knife for clean up. the rod installed backwards was pretty neat too. but in all it does have a brand new .030 piston and .010 under rod. so with a super clean engine i installed new gaskets and cleand everything up and put it together the right way and this is what i ended up with. i ran this eninge for almost 5 hours pulling trailers and runing a rear blade and lots of other things before i wanted to try mowing with it. the engine started having an inconsistant loud knock. so after checking everything external i pulled the eninge down and i can't find any signs of wear or what the noise was. it's not a rod knocking noise, or a loose front pully or the drive clutch rattle kind of a sound. it really sounds like i'm hitting the block with a hammer but it has no rythem like a loose rod. soo i'm still looking lol. thanks again to all the ideas and comments. i have really thick skin so ask and comment anything you like. the only bad questions are the ones never asked.

Jesse-

Do you have to tools to measure the bore of the engine as per the Kohler manual? With the amount of mistakes you've discovered, I wouldn't trust anything that shop did. Perhaps it was bored inaccurately.
