I installed my mazda starter today on my 84. I'm not clear on what modifications were
supposed to be done to make it work. I just used a 10mm bolt threaded into the bottom ear
and a 5/16 bolt and nut on the top ear to allow me to roll the drive deeper into the ring gear.
It seems to work ok, little noisy maybe. At least now I don't have to contend with two
batteries. no one has a take on a chain drive to replace the transfer gear setup on a hydro?

My guess as to why no one has done it would be because the output shaft of the hydro is the small reduction gear...There's no changing that easily...

yeah, I was thinking that it would have to have a collar made to fit over it with internal
splines to engage the gear teeth. If the gear/output shaft could be drilled and tapped a
retainer bolt could be used to hold the sprocket collar onto it. Anyway, I haven't
disassembled mine yet to evaluate it, which is part of why I was asking if anyone had heard of
such a thing. I don't mind standing on the shoulders of others, good view from up there.

would #50 chain be suitable to transfer up to 60 hp?
Tractor supply had quite a selection of sprockets and they looked beefy enough.

thanks for the link. At 1430lbs operating strain I think the #50 will be ample.
Yes there is only two gears in this drive but I was gonna have to flip my carrier anyway to
accomodate my opposite roation engine. So now I won't have to.

At what RPM does it produce 60 hp? It will probably be fine as long as the engine can't produce that amount of power below 3000 rpm or so.

the engine probably doesn't make that much power, but with 84 cubic inches to work with it
has the potential. If it did manage I expect it would be at the upper end of the rpm range.

currently it probably doesn't make that much power, but with 84 ci it has the potential.
If it ever does, I suspect it would be at the top end of the range.
