Matt and I agree on few things but we do agree on your choice of that battery! I'll give you a hundred bucks for the tractor! That's twice what that battery cost you. Since you place so little value on the tractor, you should find that a heck of a deal!

HMmmm.. that seems a bit harsh.. but if it causes harm or worse a fire then 50 or 100 bucks is a cheap insurance policy!
 
We had a farmer around here who got an unknown number of PDI's (plowing while intoxicated). Never had a drivers license in his 94 years. Just drove his 4020 anywhere after he bought it new. I never knew him to be sober, or a jerk. I was kind of mad when he took my crapsman to run to the gas station. Cop was watching his tractor at a neighbor's house. I was 14, he brought it back and gave me $50 for a rental fee. My parents shook their heads and I didn't leave the key in it anymore.

I find the battery issue interesting, not sure why it still has so much voltage. But I'd just replace it and not have the danger still hanging around.

Wayne - wait a minute here now.

If you figured out a way to epoxy it all up, then I think it very likely COULD blow up again. What ever caused it to blow up before could still be an issue. Why risk it?

As Matt said, that thing should just be a core now (if they will even give you core credit).
 
It amazes me how a post can sit for almost days then receive all sorts of replies in such a short time.

I thought about the core charge value but the fact the battery still holds a charge and I have about twenty "core charges" sitting around why not try and use it with the electrolysis tank??? That's as far as I would take a battery in this condition. I haven't done anything with it and don't even know whether epoxy would do anything to help contain acid or anything for that matter. It was simply a thought. When connected to the electrolysis tank it serves as a "constant" 12 volt delivery from what I've learned and I connect the charger directly to the battery. In other words, if the battery continues to hold a charge why not put it to use?

Time will tell.

As long as you have an old "dumb" battery charger, there is no need for a battery in the circuit for electrolysis.
 
...I'm not losing my eyesight over a damaged GT battery......core charge it for the lead plate value and be thankful you weren't hurt.....don't go looking for more trouble.

I've read more than once that using a battery with a charger connected gives a steadier (?) constant delivery of voltage to the anode. That's the way I have always set things up and yes, I have a couple of old chargers I use with the system.

You're right Steve, there's no need taking chances I guess. I just hate having to core what appears to be a strong battery still.

Today I plan to change out the v/r once again. It's not charging and I found another "old style" v/r that, I think, has never been used. Changing out the v/r has to be one of the least liked jobs on a 1x9 unless one removes the back wheel to access that one bolt.

I'm going to challenge your "no stupid questions" statement lol.
I just got a 1970 106 that seems to run well, but needs adjustments and TLC.
#1 My shifter. I know the pattern is:
R 2
1 3
But mine isn't like that even though it's marked correctly. If I am in Reverse and pull straight back/up it goes into 3rd. 2nd is in the right place, but pulling the lever back/up gets me 1st gear. How on earth did this happen? Gear lever is a bit sloppy
#2 Mower deck is REALLY loud. All spindles and idlers seem loose and turn freely, but this thing sounds like a Cessna taking off. It DOES NOT seem to bog the engine down and seems to cut okay. Is it normal for these to be so loud?

I have no idea how the gears could switch around. I don't think a loose shift lever could cause it. What mower deck do you have? 38", 42", 44"? They can be loud but then loud can be subjective.
 
John, it's time to remove the shifter.

I had one where the bell on shift rod broke, also could be shift rod.
