Here's the 128 I have spoken about with the 48" deck. I am still at a crossroad about completing the mating of these two. As a matter of fact I think I convinced him to go with a "bolt on" set up but he has put money in the 48" and that would mean a loss for him. I showed him a nice 42" as well as a 44" stamped deck. He liked the 44" and felt the 42" wasn't quite wide enough.

Now I have to drag out a 44" and go through it. I will have to find a proper undercarriage too which I'm sure is out there somewhere.

The 128 needs a bit of attention itself. I've already done the carb but that's it. I explained to him about the pto, the clutch, the hood hinge, and a few other things until I saw him looking like "how much will all of this cost???". The good news is that ir's all there and mostly OEM. It is missing the spacer cup for the teaser spring but the spring wasn't broken. The clutch disc is separating at the lamination but should be usable. I can only imagine what the pressure plates look like.

I went to his house yesterday and installed the carb. After an hour or so of talking we decided we had to get the 128 here. After jumping the battery I started it and we loaded it in his truck. We were using planks and the front tow in was out so badly it kept pushing the planks together and risking falling off. I felt a little bad because he has never driven it and here I was driving it to the truck.

It's overall a nice unit (even with the after market seat).

48" was available for use on the 8/9 series early in production......there dhould be no reason a 48 wouldn't be "bolt up" with the right combo of subframe parts.

Steve-

I have 4-48" decks but they all have the angle on the rear for strength maybe (as Kraig mentioned) and the spring loaded pins for easier mounting. It's my understanding this deck was made for narrow frame tractors up to the 8/9 series or at least before the series. I'm just not sure how this deck mounts properly but I'm familiar with the later decks. I'll probably go with a whole new set up and install a 44A since he liked that deck and it will make life so much easier for him to service his deck.

On another note...I'll post a couple of pics in the sandbox of something he had that I would love to have.

.

I parted a very rusted 48" deck that was on Angel's 129 and kept the subframe. A friend has a 109 with a 48" deck. This spring I was given a 48" deck for a 128 that I'm now thinking of keeping and using. I'd heard the subframe was different but never thought anything about it.

When people think your tractor is super cooL, ask them if they want to drive it,,, and don't forget to show them how to operate the deck,,,

Wayne - I assume he has the air cleaner and the little side panels for it. That 48" converted pin on style deck looked pretty good on the top side but without the baffles I doubt it would work well. The 44" you mentioned would need a subframe with the angle pulleys and is more common on the 8/9 series, at least what I've seen.

Hope the guy has to fix all the things that need fix'n. Would be a shame to let some stuff go. The hood hinge is a common item and pretty cheap to replace. The other things, well you gotta charge something for your time.

I know you said the seat doesn't look bad but it looks raised up alot to me. Must have a thick plate underneath or something. I'd try to get it closer down to the springs if it were mine.

Overall the tractor does look pretty good. I especially like the red pin stripe on the hood

Hydro-

The seat is something I noticed right away. Then, when we were loading it and I actually got on it I noticed it was a very comfortable seat yet very high. I would lower it or replace it if it were mine simply because shifting requires bending over a bit too much. And the hood hinge is shot. I've already explained to him about the QL hood hinge and even showed him one when he delivered the tractor yesterday.

This is one of those cases where a person pays too much for a unit and I don't think he will be as happy as he would be using a hydro for mowing. He got a little "taken" too not knowing enough to see the deck just didn't belong on this 128. Sure, it can be made to work but why???

I also explained the difference between nf vs wf plus the reason why he would need a different mule drive/undercarriage with the 44A deck. I could tell he was a little overwhelmed. He's a retired school teacher and remembers watching grounds crews using cub cadets. He said he saw what some would call abuse and the cubs just took it and went on.

The whole thing bothers me because he has gone so far trying to simply put together a nice mowing unit. I also hate that he has invested so much into something that didn't work out well. And like my other endeavors, I haven't got the heart to charge him what it would normally cost to correct everything. There are many things that will need attention and I'm not the type to be satisfied with half-a$$ work or just leaving some ailing things alone until they break completely. One example is the primary belt (pto) tensioner must have broken and the PO welded a 3/8" bolt with only about two inches of thread for adjustment. I'll probably end up cutting it apart and weld a 5/16" bolt and cut the threads to match OEM. The part costs $40 so I figure it's worth it since I can do it yet I just can't charge what a welder would charge for it so...

I've also got some of that wonderful Carolina weather with highs in the low to mid 90s in which to do all of this.

Wayne - I feel for the guy, and I really feel for you. I just hate it when someone fixes up one of these units incorrectly and then sells it off as being in great condition. I wish I could be there to help you (well sorta wish because of those NC temps). I know you'll be greatly satisfied when you're done, and I hope the owner really appreciates it. Please don't ask him who he got the unit from - or I would be afraid you might do something you'll regret later.
