Wayne, IH also made a QA style 48" deck. Here's what they look like. The manual that I captured this photo from is in the manuals section of the forum. Notice the QA version, in addition to the QA mounts, also has a 45 degree bend at the back of the deck housing in place of the 90 degree bend. I'm guessing it added some stiffness to the housing.

Wayne - I think you're absolutely correct. If you don't do something about those raised rear eye bolts that deck isn't going to last very long. The deck is going to crack where the bolts go thru unless some additional steel has been added on the underneath side of the deck. I've seen several decks cracked at the mounting points for the eye bolt mounts, and even with the spring loaded mounts. I used to have the deck skins welded and also have a small thickening plate added to the underside so it wouldn't crack again.

I see no reason you can't change those raised eye mounts to the spring loaded mounts. I think you're biggest problem will be leveling the deck and making sure there is no interference issues. I'm pretty certain I've seen at least 2 styles of those spring loaded mounts and you're older 48" decks likely have the taller versions. You're biggest issue after adding them will likely be leveling the deck front to rear.

If for some reason you can't change the mounts I'd suggest at least adding large washers at least on the underneath side and even on the top, so the pressure is spread out across the deck skin.

Hydro, yep, there is a second, (possibly taller), version of the QA bracket for the 48" decks. I have the older version on my 48" deck. I've had this mower deck for >10 years and I've never used it. It's buried in my shed.

David, "International Danco" Underdrive, model UD-6. I'm going to guess that they were added by the dealer.

Thanks Kraig, Hydro-

I read the pdf you posted Kraig. It was helpful but didn't include a picture of the underneath side. I'm now wondering if this deck had baffling (no existing signs) for air circulation. If so it's missing on this one. If it didn't come with the baffling don't ya'll think it would be advisable to put some in? It has been welded and "fixed" on the right rear corner too as I have seen on other decks. Other than that this deck is in very nice shape.

What you stated Hydro was exactly what I was thinking. This is a very heavy deck and I don't think the bolts/spacers will last very long. I've seen the spring loaded version bent on several decks so... And this deck has no renforcement other than washers underneath.

I'll know more once I see what the PO did to adapt this deck to a wf. And I hope to see why the PO had everything set so high on the deck, front and rear (???).

.

Wayne, I may have a photo from a brochure or forum member of the bottom of the 48" deck. I'll see what I can dig up for you...

Wayne, found some!

Kraig-

I'll have to admit I've never seen baffling like that but the more you study it the more sense it makes (I think). The way it goes up to the spindle at the exhaust port must have something to do with increasing air flow. I'd like to see one "in person" so I could see exactly where it goes or attaches.

Thanks again Kraig and if you happen to find a little more detailed pic that would be great. If not don't worry. You do this site a great service with your photo gallery. I will just let my imagination go to work to try and duplicate it.

That is weird baffle indeed!!

This big momma was under my 147 when I rescued it from under a tree last summer.
Looks like the PO modified it some to accommodate larger rear wheels.

Wayne and Kraig - boy that is some strange baffling in the pics Kraig posted of the underside.

Wayne - I know you're saying it seems to make sense but I really wonder. That 3rd blade, on the discharge side, has the spindle behind the baffle. I'd bet the area behind the baffle would really get clogged up with grass.

Here's another thing to think about: The later IH didn't use this baffle design. Why did IH change it? (Could it be because it didn't work very good, clogged up, had issues?)

If I was going to make a baffle for the deck I'd work towards the baffle design used on the "Big Momma" deck that David S posted.

Charlie - in Clint Eastwood's "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" there was a guy called "Half-soldier". (He had no legs).
Here's a clip of him https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6pNBdS2i8w

I was kinda thinking you should put that bear on a platform with little wheels and hang a sign around his neck calling him "Half-bear"

Charlie,

I'll see your "half" bear, and raise you a full coyote!
