As usual things always take me longer than I Anticipate!!! EVEN when it comes to just a few clicks. I was about to Hit Submit Payment and just as my finger was on a downward motion toward the big Enter Key, daughter says "Hey Dad"! And we all Know what that Means, ugh! Anyway college tuition and so on and so forth blah blah!!!

Hey I haven't looked at the wiring diagram yet, does this brake wire go to "ignition switch"? Would brake lights come on if brake pedal is pressed with just key turn, or does tractor need to be running?

I think it's just a tail light for when the headlights are turned on. The tractor doesn't need to be running.

A dremmel tool with a small wire brush would clean those terminals real good, and the solder would stick a lot better.

Yeah I used a Rotary File on all the contact points for bulb, solder plate, and bolt thru connection "Hoping" to get some current through those old rusty assemblies!!!

I'm a 100% optimist, so I'm usually Very Hopeful, in the Beginning of any project anyway!!!! LoL

But I also consider myself a never give up, very determined kinda fella also when things don't always go my way!!!

I don't own a Fluke so many of my "diagnosis" methods are Sketch at best!

Jason: Think "taillight", not "brakelight". Brake pedal isn't in the lighting system. Have a great weekend, now that I've taken that worry off your mind.

Well actually You are 100% Correct! Also Marty said Same Thing, "In Different Words" a little earlier, I had already tried about 19 or 27 Cranks and Pressing that stupid "NOTCHED Rubber Padded Pedal" UGH,,, Then I read Marty's post and tried the Head light switch and <font size="+2">BAM</font>!!!! Heck Yeah!!!!

Bought this 1976 model 1650 IH Cub Cadet for $350.00 last week. It has a Johnson work horse #14 loader & a Gannon Box scraper / scarifier mounted to it.
Needs a LOT of work done to it, but I always wanted a little loader to use around my 5ac. property in the woods of Oregon. I've got 1200 ft. of driveway to maintain & other projects for it to do.
Problems w/it as follows. No reverse, Hydro lift not functioning for box scraper & sketchy operation of loader bucket scoop/dump action. Probably all hydro controls need new O-rings/seals and internals checked.
Engine is quiet & runs good, front pump PTO electric clutch works good, rubber is fair, loader hoses rotted, but don't leak (yet!)
Have bought a replacement seat (I would have refurbished the original, but the pan was rotted away) and the following, 2.5 gals of "Legacy" brand ISO68 Hy-Tran fluid manufactured by Sparex Inc., two "Trac" brand HF3612 Hydraulic filters, a driveshaft fan, a tunnel cover (didn't come with one) and a replacement console that has all the gauges and switches in it.
I think I have a good start for a refurbishment to get it all operating correctly and may do a full restoration at some point in the future. I'm going to try and post some pics.
I'm sure to be mining info and leads on getting this little guy sorted out, but that's why we're here right? Hope to be an asset here in the future.

That reminds me of when I first started working for my Dad doing oil changes.

Had to check the belts, hoses, air filter,PVC valve, ect....

Dad said Head lights work... I yell yep/ Bright lights ... yep / Parking Lights .... yep / Tail lights (walk to the back)...... yep / Brake lights....yep / Flashers..... yep ....nope yep....nope...yep...nope.

From my last post. Here's a picture of the clutch lever adjustment rod. The nut has the spring fully compressed and I didn't hit the .050" gap between the throw out bearing and clutch lever.

Sorry the picture didn't turn out well, but the end of the adjustment rod is abot 1/8" away from the friction disk.

Is this normal? I thought maybe my dealer might have sent me the wrong shaft. Seems to have a perfect fit in the tractor and works great otherwise.

Any comments from the gear drive owners out there?

The 1650 was bought here in L.A. county in SoCal, Kagel canyon, not far from where the fires are. I split time between Burbank and OR.for 25+ years for my job.
The lady I bought it from also has a VERY clean late 60's to mid 70's "IH/Drott skid shovel" diesel See pic) that she'll take $1500 for.
I would love to have that, but it weighs about 11,800lb. and my heavy trailer in OR. needs all new "G" rated tires and an air to electric brake conversion. Everything needs to be gone in 7 weeks, glad I saved the "Cub" from an unknown fate!

Hi Jim,
Yes, all the equipment has been sitting outside untouched for somewhere between 7-10 years. All the tires were 0 psi, but took air and has held without leaks for two weeks now! All are calcium/glycol filled for added weight, got it that way.
Someone must have banged on the 1650's starter because the magnets were in pieces. Got a new one off *bay for $45 to my door.
Checked the oil, good. Checked hydro fluid, a bit low, but good. Checked loader fluid, good.
I put a table spoon of 30 weight in the plug hole, spun it 20-30 revolves to get the "juices" flowing.
No spark on a test spin, light oxidization on points, a few passes with some "Triamite" 600 grit and blown with clean air fixed that.

Threw some gas in the tank, fired right up after 4-5 spins and it runs great! (Just needed some love and attention I guess). All fluids to be changed shortly.

From what I gather, one possible test of the "no reverse" problem is to swap relief valves on the hydrostatic tranny and see if that changes anything.
Sitting on the machine, the right side valve has a little fluid leak out it's vent hole on top. I saw the postings about the fellow on *bay that can rebuild these reliably for a reasonable fee and comes highly recommended by the group.
If the swap test proves me right, then I'll send both in for a rebuild. I here though that this type of test is not always definitive.

Attached is a pic of my brother with my other dirt mover, a 1936 CAT 22, crank start only, 4 cyl. Another GREAT deal, $250 with a 12ton tilt bed trailer. (Still needs to have the fuel tank cleaned, note the 2.5 gal. tank hung off the roll cage!)}}

So, glad I can provide a good laugh, and sense of humor once in a while ( "is this switch self-grounding?") !!!!! Shop time today as I wright,..... installed the correct light switch to the 125. Kraig, I have the 125 wire harness figured out, even though I forgot my ohm meter at work. Still, what a pain in the neck it is, not having the wires color coded as my model 72.

Q: Is IH part# 545130-R92 the correct mechanical voltage regulator used on the model 125 ( 1x4/5 series ) garden tractor?

Q: My model 72 VR ( VR# IH 545130-R93 )has just three terminals on it. The new replacement ( made in U.S.A ) VR currently WITH my 125 has three terminals, PLUS a ground terminal on the opposite side of the three. There was a custom wire from this ground going to the starter-gen., but which terminal on the s/g I don't recall at the moment. Please note, my 125 harness has a ground, that goes where the VR cap screws to the VR mounting bracket-to-the cast iron grill housing. I don't know what I'd do with the extra ground terminal, except to change the VR to the original three terminal VR.
I feel it is a good idea to replace the aftermarket VR with a factory correct three terminal VR. Is this a good idea?

As mentioned, the 125 harness is a complete-non-hack-job, original unit. Only component missing is the correct ground wire for between the two head lamps.
 
Jim Lord.... $350.00 ? As they say on the Garage Journal...."you suck" I think you scored wayyyy beyond that even! Congratulations!I looked at one two years ago, no box scraper, just the loader, on a 149, guy wanted $2500 firm. Way to go!
