Thanks Charlie, I'll pay attention to that. I also found a spring assist inside the frame with the 3 point lift, so this is perhaps more than just a nice parts tractor. I may have to change the oil and put in some fresh gas to see if I can get this started. This is how my last two CC's have come to join the garage, they all started out as "parts" and then just evolved into running tractors.

OUCH! Some people should never be allowed near a welder or cutting torch!

Looks like the mule drive on that 100 was modified for some sort of front mounted attachment and a lift handle from an old farm implement added to operate it. Must of wanted to leave the mower deck on with the front attachment so just weld on a extra lift handle.

I see it was also too hard to pull the rear transmission to fix the shifter so they just cut the top of the tunnel cover off for access. Very sad.

RE 73.....

Slot has probably been elongated to allow access to the drive shaft roll pins.....

It's just too stinking hot for this old guy to be working outside right now. Danged meds that I have to take prohibit any "fun in the sun". I haven't been able to even mow the watergrass on the neighbor's lawn with the 125 or work on the 104.

Anyone else have similar stories?

Strange (to me) parts on the 100 I picked up at RPRU last month.

Steering box w/brass thrust washer INSIDE.
Housing plug w/no locking slots or hole for cotter key to lock it. It turned HARD all the way out for some reason.
Bearings looked good but the lower cone has a chunk missing from it. I have a good used one but it is not the cone shaped type
Small/skinny (broken)seal retainer w/no outer lip. (Left one in bottom pic).

Also, front axle (no pictured) w/no grease zerk, broken retaining spirol pin and axle pin frozen/rusted in axle. Hope I can find my sawzall!

Going to repack it w/grease, make a new seal and button it back up using a newer seal retainer and adjusting plug w/cotter key slot after drilling a hole for a key.

I replaced the teaser spring and de glazed the pressure plates and clutch disc as well as replacing the rear driveshaft coupler. Need to rob a captive 1/2 nut from the parts 125 frame to replace a missing one the left front side of the frame before re-installing the engine.

Rebuilt the clutch throw out lever hanger w/a piece of 3/8" bushing stock welded between the holes. Will put a grease fitting in the top of it and secure w/a new clevis pin.

I think it will stay in it's work clothes for now. At least it should drive straight when I get the new rod ends installed too!

All in all I think it was a pretty constructive day in the shop. That A/C sure is nice even though it's a little undersized for the job!

David,

I am wondering if the steering column may have came out of another type GT?

You are going to need a hydraulic press to get that pin out of the axle! (BTDT twice so far.)
Don't forget to drill a hole through the pin to aid in the removal.

As for the grease zerk in the axle, none of my 70/100 tractors have the zerk. Neither does my 71.

David S., that steering column just has the old style plug. As to the bronze washer, most likely someone had it apart and put it back together wrong.

Here's why the plug turned hard the whole way out, note the mention to use a center punch to "spread the plug threads":

Very interesting Kraig! I guess I'll put the original plug back in then.

Ser # is 102357
Here's the deck that was under it. I think it has been around the block a few times??
And what's up w/the weird blades and that little up-kick bend in them? They surely are not worn don THAT much are they??

FWIW...
My other 100 w/creeper & rear PTO is #124578

David S., those blades are likely just that worn.

Or sharpened a few to many times.

bet that deck still cuts, at least whacks the grass off...

And, it probably leaves a streak of uncut grass every time that you make a turn!

The deck itself is really solid.
Looks like the PO cut or broke off the ears for the wheels and added a reinforcement for new wheels.
No rust through and I have a par of outer castings from a rotted deck that I saved but it was the next size up from this one, so the blades are too big for this one. So, if I can find a decent set of the correct size blades, I think I will restore this deck as the spindles seem to turn real smooth yet.

David S., my guess is the previous owner wanted to use a 38" deck (I'm assuming that's what you have) with 8.5 inch wide rear tires. To do that he widened out the wheel spacing on the deck. A standard 38 inch deck will only work with 6 inch wide tires.

Thanks Brian, that makes sense.

Doug, I'm pretty sure its a 38" "pin on" unit.
The extra cast iron ends I salvaged are from a rotted 42" deck and those blades are too long for this deck. The 100 has/will have narrow tires on it.

I'm going to dis-assemble it today and get it off to the sandblaster.
