Hello all, I hope I'm doing this correctly, as it says "New threads no accepted on this page" below the archives.
I was given a IH Cub Cadet 124 today, and after fiddling with it for an hour, I got it to run, and run rather well. There are a few problems, however, that I was wondering if you all could assist me with.
1. When cranking, whether using a standard mower battery, or one with jumper cables connected to my truck, the engine seems to turn over slower than I would expect. Probably half the speed, perhaps a bit less, than my 2006 Craftsman riding mower. It still starts up and all fine, but I don't know if that's a sign the starter/generator needs a rebuild, or if that is normal. I will check/clean all connections tomorrow, and try from there, and see if it still acts up. Couldn't hurt, anyway.
2. When running, the generator does not charge the battery. Not a big deal, IMO, but, something I would like to fix. Are these easy to rebuild yourself, or is it best to send it off for that? I saw in the FAQ an article about them, and will conduct those tests tomorrow, and see if that helps me get anywhere.
3. Over the years, the main pulley connected to the crankshaft of the motor has "slipped" out of the slot in the shaft so many times, the first 1.5-2" of shaft coming out of the motor is so worn/stripped, the only way to secure it is to move the pulley further down the shaft. While this works, it does throw off the V-belt after it runs a bit. Again, not a big deal, but I would like to fix it, I'm assuming the engine would have to be tore down, and the crankshaft replaced. Is it worth going into it that much? Or best let a sleeping dog lie? Is there perhaps a way to put washers or something behind the starter pulley, to help line it up more with the crankshaft pulley?
4. Those are the three main things, aside from that, I love it to death. I would appreciate any assistance any of you folks could give me, and I apologize if I didn't post this properly, but I don't see a "New Topic" button, and this forum has a different "presentation" than I am used to.
Thank you!
