I washed up the 100 over the weekend, even broke out the can of paste wax! She looks good! Adjusted the clutch pedal a little bit to take up some of the play. Think the bearing on the clutch shaft is starting to go, its a little noisey. Need to look into that a little more. Wouldn't want it to break down on the wife when she was doing her yard work - wouldn't hear the end of it!

MARLIN - That's a nice looking 70, original condition. Hard to remember those old tractors are soon going to be 50 yrs old.

The 70 I got from Dad that he got new back in '65 was in a lot worse shape than that one.

Lucas J. Yes, a 1650 is one sweet ride and that 16 horse Kohler makes short work of things. I wouldn't be afraid if I didn't see the deck attached. Just spend a few minutes and install the deck. I wouldn't mind having a 128 only to be truthful after using the 125 with a 12 hp and then stepping up to a 1650 to do the same job a.k.a. mowing that extra four horses makes the job so much quicker and easier. Both aren't bad tractors so it would be personal liking. What I'd like to have would be a 128 frame with the 16 horse Kohler with hydraulic lift. And that would be more than likely a Plow Day tractor for when I wanted to drive a gear drive with a twelve inch plow behind it. AND.... that little 70 could be yours ... I could meet you around the 200 mile mark for gas money. (I could go for a Road Trip.)

Terry B. I almost forgot to mention. Great catch on removing those pesky balance gears and saving your engine.

Paul Bell, Thanks for the info on the grenade gears. Sorry I'm behind on my computer stuff.

Quick Question - I read somewhere that the Kohler Command engines used in today's lawn and garden tractors need to be shut-off at no lower rpms than 1800, half throttle. Failure to so can and has blown a head gasket.

Question is - what rpm are you supposed to shut down one of these Kohler K series engines in a Cub Cadet?

I've always idled down these engines prior to turning off, but this Kohler Command info has my wondering if what I'm doing is correct.

Dennis F. I must admit that 70 would be a keeper if I could do it. I wish I knew what happened to the front panel. I don't see any indication of it ever having lights on the little guy. Those 6x12 Ag tires are Armstrongs with a nice almost new bite to them. Very mild weather checking.

I've only seen one other 70 in almost as good of condition and that one had a blown engine. Broken rod but, otherwise good block on that one. It had lights and rear weights. A kid wanted it bad enough that I traded a paint job and a little welding for the tractor. He did the welding and not the apint job. When I checked in again his wife said that he got tired real quick of the tractor and hauled it to the local salvage yard.

Bill,

I looked at the Operator's Manual for a 125. It said to drop the engine speed to "slow", let it idle for a short period and then turn it off.

Guys I had and sold a 13 fin Bolens a few years ago, I think my 149 is almost as strong a tractor and just love to hear it bark when I use it.I got my Muffler for Art A and it has a nice tone when used like I do.I don`t know how I found time to do things when I worked for a living lol. I can`t seem to spread myself now to do much for my Cubs . They just sit in the Cub shed waiting to get used .Wife wants to go camping so today I`am getting the fiver ready check tires and batteries . The 5.9 C is ready any time no problem there.I think anything you could do with a 16 hp K I can do a little slower with my 149 . I sure wish I lived close to Wayne so we could spend some good time on our tractors,That would be so good to keep me on track.Have a great day ! Later Don T

Air temp of 103 breaking the record temp set about 100 years ago. I think the corn in McHenry county is about to start popping. I'm not doing $--t with the cubbies today. 8-(

TOM - Been over three weeks since I mowed part of the lawn. I mowed the very front part, plus what I didn't mow two weeks before that. And I can't tell where I mowed 3 wks ago verses 5 weeks ago. I have an "L" shaped patch in the frt yard that's all crabgrass, and somehow it's still green and growing, but even the weeds are dying around here.

We had 3/10ths inch of rain the whole month of June, normal June is 3-4 inches. Not sure how May was but I think it was short too. Last rain we got that amounted to anything was Memorial Day, 3/4 inch.

Cubbies don't need much work to keep them running, and even less when you don't run them!

Dennis,
The guy I run grain cart for at harvest say he might throw in the towel pretty soon if we don't get any rain, and he farms 7000+ acres. OUCH!

TOM - Your Boss may be missing out on something good there! 3 yrs ago my Brother-in-law had 40 acres of beans that got hailed on really bad, Total loss, cashed the crop insurance check, then combined them anyhow. They only made 4-5 bushels/acre, but he said it was the nicest combining he'd ever done. Just drive and drive and never worry about that pesky grain hopper filling up and having to unload. He'd fill the grain tank once in the morning and once in the afternoon. Then it was chore time.

What's bad about this year's drought, is it covers such a HUGE area. Bet it's over half of the corn belt, WI, IL, IN, IA, MN, MO, & NE.

The corn field that borders 2-3 sides of my yard was looking pretty good until this 100 degree temps yesterday & today. Went from knee high to head high in about a week. But without some rain soon it may not yield very good.

Anyhow, it's nice & cool in the insulated shop where the Cubbies are. And I ain't about to get them out.

This is exactly why I put the AC in the garage (and am in the process of insulating). I went home from lunch and took out a hydro trans in the garage without breaking a sweat!

under edit: At 10,000btu, it's about the minimum for the garage, even with insulation.

I'll be more than happy to share some wet stuff with you guys, 9" in the last 2 weeks is a little much up my way!
They are calling for 1" tomorrow again, Grrrrrrrr
Must be the left over snow we didn't get last winter!

Charlie P. We'd gladly accept some of that rain. I had to quit working outside just after 11:00 a.m. today due to everything left in the sun for five minutes was like picking up hot iron off the stove. It clouded up, thundered and then left without a drop early this morning. Colo's annual Truck Pull is being held in the early evening this year on this Saturday instead of Sunday at noon.
Back outside since the temperature is finally down to 91*.

With an apparent corn shortage happening, Do you think the government will stop making 'funny fuel' for a while so we can feed people and animals ???

ALLEN - Without getting too political, I really REALLY doubt it. A lot of things will depend on whether we have a one or two term president, but I don't think making ethanol from corn is one of them.

It's been a great boost for farmers, corn & beans are at record high prices. But ethanol & bio-diesel from soybeans is NOT a sustainable energy program by any means.

Some advice please.
Tuesday afternoon after the grandson had finished mowing the lawn for me I found the shift lever on my model 70 spinning around like a helicopter.
I can find the gears and move it forward and reverse so I'm hoping it's not to bad of a repair. I am in the middle of "honey do" projects and did not need something else. Going out today to give it another eyeball. The manuals I have don't seem to indicate how to get at the underside of the shifter.
Thanks for any guidence,
Jim

PS I did search the terms Mod 70 and shifter and somebody had asked a similar question back in 2009, but I did not see any reaponse.

JAMES - Do another search on the words "broken shifter cup".

I guess maybe we should petition the moderators about making this repair one of the FAQ's.

James,
BTDT. First ??'s would be;
1) What model CC do you have? Some models are harder to remove the trans cover than others.

2) Can you weld or do know a welder?

3) If you answer no to #2 figure on buying one from one of our sponcers or post a ad in the classified section.
