Does anyone know about when they began to install the KT-17 series II engine in the 782?

So Harry are you dis agree-ing with the info I wrote? or just pointing out that I did not supply enough info?

As for the book, I do not know the accuracy of it, but would "think" "most" is accurate.
I do not recall another wheel info or I would of posted it.
 
The triangle centered wheel is "Fatter" as Harry mentioned, but that doesn't make Ken's book wrong....he just left off one of the descriptors...... no big deal.....
 
Jeff - I disagreed that the wheel only had the 2 differences you mentioned. I thought you were saying the booked stated there were only 2 differences. As I noted and Steve B agreed. the later wheel with the triangular cap is fatter/thicker. It doesn't mean the book is wrong about the 2 differences mentioned - they are correct. But in my view the 3rd difference is a Big Deal - since it's why I prefer the later wheel - it just feels better in your hand since it's thicker. I do also like the silver IH on the center cap too - which is also why I have one on my 169.

Now you oughta get yourself one of these wheels - you'll be amazed how much better it feels in your hand. Most of the used ones around are worn pretty smooth. I don't know if you can still get a brand new one, but when they are new the wheel has real little nibs that make it feel even better.
 
Put a spinner on it and you don't care about the shape......and it steers quicker too!!!!!
 
Steve - I should have also mentioned it's another case where the old saying holds true again - Thicker/Bigger is Better. And, I don't have one of those spinners yet. I'm holding out until I find one with a girlie on it.
 
Harry - never heard 'em called spinners, up our way we called 'em "Necker Knobs", apparently Bob invented them??? (I dunno, I think that's why)...

My dad always called them "suicide knobs" because they would come off in your hand

I agree with you that the later style steering wheels have a fatter/thicker outer ring that makes for an "easy grip" feature. It is very noticable going from my 149 to the 782. The 782 steering wheel is much easier to grip and easier on the fingers too.
 
Yep, same here, I have always heard them called Necker Knobs...

Steve is also correct, I have one on both my 1450 and 1650, and I think Dad has one on the #1 149 and the 782 as these are the "primary" tractors. I honestly could not really tell you the difference in feel between the 2 wheels (the 149 had the "Tin" insert (I think it dissapeared in 79 or 80)) and the other 3 have the "plastic triangle" wheel. I think I have touched the actually wheel maybe a dozen times...... my hand just lands on the Knob..... there has been one on them for as long as I can remember. I'm not sure I could drive one without a Knob....

While on the subject of necker knobs/spinners, who makes a good one that will last for more than a year or two? I'm about to put my third one on my tractor and would like this one to last.
