Jason D.-

That depends on the tractor. I think you'll probably need a minimum of 12 h.p. with a gear drive, or more with a hydro to pull that, at least in the Illinois cement, er, soil I'm used to plowing. If you have sandy soil or something that has been plowed recently, you could probably get away with a 12 h.p. hydro.

My 14hp model 1450 pulls the 12" Brinly without any problems

And my 17hp model 1712 pulls it with ease

Like Matt said, soil type and condition plays a part in transmission type and hp needed to pull a 12"...also traction and having the plow set up correctly make a big difference

Thanks for the help and web site Charlie & kraig.
I may be able to purchase said Cub if I can find out who it belongs to and they are willing to part with it.

In my neck of the woods there are not many of the older Cubs. This can be both good and bad at the same time. When one is found it is likely they are not as familiar with it as the green ones and it can be had fairly cheep. Finding is the key.

Foolish me, when I tore down my 14 HP Kohler on my CC147 last fall, I didn't take photo's or make a drawing of the placement for the head studs and spacers. Now I'm having trouble determining their proper placement.
Does anyone have a photo or drawing showing the proper placement?
Dumb in Texas!

I am considering swaping engines in my 127 cub. It has the Original 12 hp Kohler and I have a 14 hp kohler that has I think Very low hours. They are Both good engines. I just think the added HP would be nice. My question for anyone who would care to put in their 2 cents worth is : Is the Hydro in the127 the same as a 147,? And is the oil pan interchangeable between the two engines. I (think) the pan on the 14 HP is Deeper than the 301 kohler.? I do think (without looking) that the goveno

Rich P,

I think the only difference in the oil pans is flat or deep. They both bolt up. I dont have a pic of a flat pan, but here is a pic of two deep pans.

Top pan is aluminum, bottom is cast. Also, I think the 16hp pans are different?
You should get some good info on the other questions you asked.

Rich, both the 12hp and the 14hp have the deep pans, the 10hp had a flat oil pan. I have a flat oil pan setting in my basement right now that came off of a 10hp. Let me know if you need a photo. It is possible that someone swapped out the 12hp for a 10hp and your 127 is now actually a 107. If the pan on it does not look like one of the pans that Todd posted you likely have a 10hp. Hydros should be the same. FWIW simply putting a deep pan on in place of a flat pan won't gain you much unless you put a long dipper crank in it too. I just had this discussion with David Kirk as I'm hoping to someday have one of my 10hp Kohlers rebuilt and I have a spare deep pan off of a 14hp that I thought would be a good idea to include as part of the rebuild.
