Welcome Beth!!
I'm about 6 miles from you in Marcellus... Let me know If you need a second opinion, I could look at it..

Old Slushie vs. "Newer" slushie:

pushed this last snowstorm with a new to me 782. For years I had used a 123. A couple times I found myself reefing on the hydro lift lever wondering for a split second why I wasn't slowing down! It is taking me a little to get used to the switch in the levers, from forward/reverse on the left to the up/down fwd/rev on the right.

Can't deny the help with the increased power and "grunt" though.

Just checking in here. Welcome to all the newbies!!!

I finished putting the snowthrower on the 125 yesterday and switched batteries from the 782D to the 125. That Interstate battery made a huge difference in the starting on the 125. We only had light dusting for snow here. It's supposed to warm up a little also. The snow can stay away for awhile longer.

147 Need Help : Having problems getting that last bearing cup out of my steering column. (top one) taped at it from the back but no luck, Don,t see a retainer clip can some one give me some help on this ... Thanks Jeff U

I think you can just pull the steering shaft and tap the cup out with the shaft. Just bounce it all around and it will fall out

Thanks Don.. I,ll give it a try.. it,s really stuck !!! Jeff U

As they wear they will go off center and jam. Have a look up with the cup removed and the shaft out and throught the side. Some times a little tap with a brass punch will break them loose. Be gentle with the box ,just tap the cup. good luck and keep us informed.

Could tell you how less confusing than me !

And if that don`t get results, haul out the steering tube from the box and then use a punch to get it out!

Don Thanks: I.m going to work on my 147 shortly, I,ll give it a try & post back later .. Jeff U

Jeff-

I had the same thing happen a couple of weeks ago. I used a slide hammer. Mine has a screw on tube that has a small right angle hook or shoulder. I just hooked it over the race and slid the hammer and it popped out. I didn't have to use force....just the slide of the hammer and it stopping did the trick. This particular race was still in good shape but just stuck well with dried grease.

I've also used a long rod before I got the slide hammer. You have to use a finger to make sure the rods end is positioned right on the bearing cup then after removing your finger just give it a tap.

Good luck!

Would anyone have any tips/tricks on plowing gravel driveways I need to have something for mine because the snow lays on it and freezes and makes a sheet of ice.Would a rear scraper blade be better and eaiser to control?Someone told me before to put PVC pipe over the cutter edge.Thanks,Joey.

Joe D.
I'm no expert by any means but I probably clear more gravel driveway than anyone you know.
It figures out to be about 4.65 acres.
It's always best IMHO to let the snow get down in the snow and then set your skid shoes from 1/2" to 3/4" to get a good base layer for the rest of the winter.
After I get a good base down, I raise the skid shoes to where they scrape tight to the ground. That way you leave the gravel where it is and it's smooth grading the rest of the winter.
Yea, you get some ice if it thaws some, but hey! That's what sand is for.
Here's my route, outlined in blue.

i was wondering if i still got a good deal on the 147 or did i get ripped off? i paid 165 for the tractor and i have come to realize that not only is the engine need an overhaul, but the entire block is shot. when the balance gear let loose it took a hunk of cast iron out of the lower part of the block rendering it useless. i have a friend of mine that works in the small engine buisness and he is going to sell me a good block, camshaft, and crankshaft for 100 bucks.

good grief. i spent 165 on the tractor and now will have an additional 100 bucks in a block. then im going to have to rebuild this block which is going to have to include possibly a hone, boring. also is going to have to include a new rebuild kit. 100 bucks if i go stens for piston, gaskets, vavles, conecting rod, rings and everything except machining. i dont know what the machining is going to cost.

when its all said and done im probably going to have 500 bucks invested in the tractor just to get something that runs, drives, and mows again.

did i get screwed over? with everything this tractor needs it should have been free. i did this guy a favor by removing it from his shop, now im stuck with a tractor that doesnt run and is going to require an investment to make it run again. it will feel good to save it from the junk pile, but by the time its done i will have more invested in then i could sell it for. yikes.

i probably have more invested in my off topic than it is worth but i use it, so i can justify it. i have tilled a garden with it, cleared snow, and mowed. i bought the cub becuase it was inexpensive for a hydrostatic and i know they are built well. a hydrostatic tractor is a much nicer machine to mow with.

Price a new one!

You complain about 500 bucks to put into something that will more than likely survive long after your dead and gone?

Besides, The 147 is one of the best Cubs ever built!
