Bobby, neat pictures.

yea guys,lots of geese.
Early season the limit this year was 8/day. There are no lack of them and no problem getting permission to hunt them.

Bobby, nice trail cam pics, you do much predator hunting?I bought a foxpro e caller this fall and plan on using it on the coyotes. They are starting to wreak havoc on the deer and when the cattle are calving.

Dave;
Nice job on the geese.I haven't had the pleasure of harvesting a goose yet;this is just my third season of waterfowling.Gonna go hammer some woodies and ringnecks Thursday morning!
I never have gone after predators, but they are on the list.Still trying to pick out the right gun. Some friends of mine are using .17HMR's,but I don't know if that'll work on 'yotes, which we have plenty of here in the South. What are you going to use?
Bobby B.

Bobby....I wouldn't use any rim fire on yotes. You could have a nice kill shot and still watch them run off to never be found. If ya choose a .17 make sure it's a .17 Rem...not the .17 rim fire. There are plenty of guys who shot a chuck with those and they lived, they just do not have the energy to do a good job. I want a .17HRM myself but it will be for target and squirrels.

Remington has a recall on .17HMR chambered semi-autos, and the .17HMR ammo going on now. They are requesting that you send in the guns, and full boxes of ammo, for refunds.

I'm not sure what is wrong with the guns, and/or the ammo also.

I have seen ads in the NRA's monthly magazine 'American Hunter', and on Remington's web site.

I still can't decide between a 22-250 or a .223 for a varmint gun.

That sucks, hope it's not a safety concern. On that note, just to clarify when I said .17 Rem I meant the .17 Rem cartridge...it's a center fire for those who don't know.

Bobby, I am using a 6mm Remington with 85 gr sierra spitzers. This is my deer gun also.
If I was going to buy a new gun I think I'd buy a 223, reasonabley priced ammo if you don't reload, lots of info and available in a wide range of guns plus i've owned one before and am setup for reloading it.
I'd say the .17 HMR is a little light for yotes. The bullets are too explosive.Very accurate and i love shooting mine. There are a group of fellas around here that run yotes with dogs and a bunch of them use the 17 HMR's.I can't imagine shooting that light of a bullet at a running yote. These guys kill alot of them, probably average 150 a year.

Deer season is over for me. My wife is getting me a rifle for Christmas, unsure of what size and make it is, but I will let you know! All those years of telling her I neeeeeed one have finally paid off!!! LOL! Coyote season is open and we can hunt 24/7 with no bag limits here in NY. I figured I will hunting them as much as possible now that I will not have to borrow my buddy's rifle. The only gun I actually own is a Marlin bolt action .22 that I got when I was 12. I told my wife about 5 different calibers I wanted in a rifle, maybe I should buy one every year!! She probably got me a .270. I'd like to have a .243, .223, 8mm-06, and an old Mauser along with an old Enfield, so I dont really know what I'm getting at this point!! I think I can wait the 2 whole days till Christmas to find out.

Scott, nice wife!

I have a Ruger, Single Six revolver in .17HMR, fun caliber for plinking. Not a good varmint caliber, unless the varmints are squirrels.

The cartridges are cute, kinda like mini .30-06 cartridges.

I have a Browning A-Bolt in .223 WSSM (Winchester Super Short Magnum) that I use for coyote hunting, I've still not been able to get one yet though. I've heard that this caliber is not the best as it burns out the barrels, could be, mines not been shot enough to worry yet. Odd looking cartridges, short and fat with a tiny bullet. (Photos of it are in the Archive through February 02, 2009) If I were going to get a rifle for varmints I'd get either a .223 (not the .223 WSSM) or the 22-250. If you are going to be saving the hides, the .243 is a little big for varmints but usable, the .270 would also be too big for varmints but makes a nice deer rifle.
