I'm kidding CHARLIE!

the performance of that qa-42, man that's impressive. i know that it takes hp to move snow, that's why when i swapped engines on my "off topic" tractor i replaced the original tired k241 with a k301 shortblock that i bought off of craigslist for 150 bucks!!! that engine only had 1 or 2 seasons of mowing on it and it has served me well. now the 147 has a 14hp kohler k321, which aparently is a low time rebuild. i wonder if that additional 2 hp would be noticeable. i will find out when i finally get it running. there is a qa42 on craigslist right now, locally but i really dont have to money to spend on it right now. i still have a working unit on my other tractor. right now i think im going get the cub running and plan to use it in the spring for mowing. the 48" will be allot nicer/faster than that 38" i have been using. i have a 2 acre lot and would like it if i can mow the lawn in less time. the hydrostat is also nicer for mowing,i think.

i hope there is a qa42 when im ready to purchase one. maybe next year.

i would probably use both tractors, set up one for blowing and one with a blade. i live in north java ny so we get all kinds of snow. today i my tractor could not throw the snow at all. i would go a couple feet and it would clog. i got frustrated and turned the pto off and just pushed the snow, which worked fine.

how does a qa42 handle really wet, nasty snow? sometimes when the snow is excisively wet i will end up with a "clog-master". its annoying. under normal snow, i dont have a problem but when its really bad it sucks.

what i really would like to do is to restore both tractors and keep them both. since i would have 2 tractors to work with, i could take the other machine apart and still have something that runs to do the yardwork with. i already have a roto tiller for my other tractor and dont really want to buy another tiller for the cub. for the little bit that i use a tiller, it works wonderfully. i also paid a fair amount of money for it and dont really want to shell that money out again to buy another tiller.

so im thinking a good deck and either a blade or a qa42 for the cub and i would be happy. i might see what my stepfather might be able to do with my existing 48 deck. if i could patch a couple holes and make it last i would be happy. im kinda leaning towards a blower for tha 147, their performance seems to be exceptional.

just looking at the 147, i like it already. disk brakes? how sweet is that. plus that transaxle looks to be built extremely heavy. right now i just need to get the thing running, i need to make sure it doesnt need anything beyond a crankshaft repair, a carburator cleaing, and resembling.

Charlie-
When I read April's post about a canopy, I was thinking she was looking for something like this, as she mentioned her dad would use it for "tractor shows"...

Maybe she will log-in again and clarify....April?

MATT G. - Thanks for the update on the newer mower decks. I investigated sticking my old 44A deck under the 72 yrs ago, and there just wasn't any way with the parts I had on hand to make that work without cutting & welding mule drives.
I'd really like to get a wider deck for the 72 because creeping along in 1st gear is so slow and a waste of a 14 HP engine. My fast (19T) 2nd I feel is too fast to mow with and I'd like to get a good wider deck under it but you're right, just not a whole lot of room under the frame. I know with my 50C under the 982 I can't raise it much above my normal 3 to 3-1/2 in. mowing height even with the bigger tires on that tractor.

ANTHONY - Dispite the difference of opinion on another site, you will notice a difference between 12 & 14 HP when under load. That's why the garden tractor companies offered higher HP tractors and forced Kohler & Onan to design & build bigger engines. Everybody could charge more for the bigger HP tractors because they could do more "work". It's amazing what a 7-8 HP Cub Cadet can do but on most jobs a 10, 12, or 14 HP tractor will do it much faster. When I got my QA-36 my #72 only had a K181 in it, I was only able to run thru 3-4 inch deep snow without slipping the clutch. When I dropped the K241 in I could run thru 5-6 inch deep snow just fine. Anything deeper and I just took smaller bites.

ART - I suppose April's Dad could make a tent like that one work on a CC. SON worked for these guys one summer; http://lafayettetent.com/

They rent some pretty big tents as you can see, 100 feet by however many "MILES" you want.

On the 44 and50 decks. The rust issue can be mostly eliminated, by disassembling, sandblasting, and coating with por 15. Don't sand the metal real smooth, the por15 needs a rougher surface to bond to. When brushed on it will give you a very smooth and shinny surface. If you want to paint over it do so while it is still a little tacky. I totally refurbished a 44 deck a few years ago and have been very happy with it. I pulled the plate off it this spring and there was no rust at all.I only clean the deck when i sharpen the blades. I have very little buildup under the deck.

Andrew, have another look at the two action photos I posted yesterday of my QA42 mounted to my 125 removing snow. That was a March 2001 snowstorm, the 5" to 6" of sticky wet snow is what the QA42 is removing. The graphite paint inside the auger housing and discharge chute is the reason it wasn't plugging up. Here's some video capture images from a 2007 March snowstorm with even deeper wet sticky snow. I bet if you were to remove any rust from the inside of the auger housing and discharge chute on your off topic snowthrower, paint it then coat it with two coats of graphite paint it too would remove snow like my QA42. Well, maybe almost like mine.

the off topic worked much better today, the outside temp was lower and it threw allot better. yesterday was just really bad because the outside temp was barely above freezing. the snow was so wet and heavy that i would just go a couple feet and the chute would be clogged rock solid, it still pushed the snow pretty good.

as far as hp ratings, years ago hp was a realistic selling feature of garden tractors and a 12 or 14hp 1970's garden tractor does indeed have significantly more power than a 7hp garden tractor. i used to have another off topic machine powered by a k161. there is a big difference between a k301 and a k161. k161's are quality engines but they are underpowered for tractor applications.

today's machines are out of hand. the most basic mtd cub cadet has "19 hp". that 19 hp kohler courage engine is terrible, and in no way produces 19 hp. you cannot convince me that a 19 hp courage POS produces more power than legendary engines such as a onan 16hp twin, a yanmar 16hp diesel, or even a 12hp k301. they actually got sued for false hp ratings. back then it was a realistic measurement of what the tractor could do. now 90% of those high hp rated lawn tractors can't even run ground engaging attachments. ground engaging attachment capability years ago were commonplace. now its a rare option on only the most expensive machines. allot of so called garden tractors have tillers that have their own engines and are tow behind. that is not a garden tractor. a garden tractor can run a pto driven tiller or single bottom plow. in order for it to be a garden tractor is has to have some way to transfer the power from the engine to the tiller and a rear lift. anything else is false advertising.

ANDREW - I agree, I think today's "horse power" is more like a "Small Shetland Pony-power".

My CC #72 still had the K181 in it when I started plowing with it. I used to fall plow my Sister-in-law's two big gardens then stop by my Dad's place and plow his. To run a tiller you need more HP and slower ground speed capability to make a proper seed bed. With a moldboard plow you turn the soil but sure can't plant anything without additional work which required more passes over the ground. Dad had his CC tiller on a 129 CC and he used it for everything from spring tilling before planting, to making the furrows for planting, and cultivating for weed control. It was the ONLY attachment he ever used on that 129. He even got his picture in Red Power Magazine with his furrow attachment.

I do think some of the newer tractors, or more correctly "mowers" are O-K for 90-95% of the work they do, mowing grass. The small tires, thin stamped frames, belt drive systems, etc. just are not designed to grade dirt, pull plows.

Another factor that caused me to switch to large farm tractor & loader snow removal equipment with either a blade or bucket was the situation of wet heavy sticky snow. With my 80" wide x 16" tall blade it ALL pushes about the same. I always seem to take a hundred pounds of SNOW with me back into the shop even while trying to scrap or brush it off.

We're supposed to get 4-6 inches Friday night & Sat. AM so I guess I better get something ready to push snow today or tomorrow.

Ok folks, here's the deal on having problems getting to the forum.

Years ago when I bought the forum, Bob did not want to sell the Domain name, only the forum.
So he finally decided to sell and that's what caused all the access problems when we had to transfer all the DNS server names over to our host instead of his.

Access problems were the remnants of what happened the other day. They will or have all iron themselves out. Each ISP will be a little bit different than others. Yours may be popping its face up every now and then simply because they may have several dns servers that cache (store requests and answers for a certain length of time), and perhaps some of them have got the new info, some have not. It all irons itself out within 24 to 48 hours or so.

OpenDNS of course does not operate all the DNS, but since they have 11 systems running in all areas of the world, it gives me an indication of how the propagation is going. http://www.opendns.com/support/cache/

If anyone is still having issues getting to the forum or don't want to wait for all the DNS servers to catch up, you can set your computer to use OpenDNS. Might speed up your computer and the website would start working right away for you. the servers are :

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

If you still have issues, or knows anyone that is, Feel free to email me direct with exactly what's happening or better yet, a screen shot.
That way we can get you fixed and able to see what's going on.

Thanks for understanding, It's been a long time coming, but we're on our way top bigger and better things real soon!

I will be glad when this site gets back up to speed. refresh times have been real slow here. Thanks for adding all the extras

not only do older garden tractors actually have the ability to start a garden, but they also make better snow removal machines. they are so heavy and strong that even heavy snows are handled well. i don't think a newer lawn tractor has the necessary weight or power for really deep, heavy, wet snows. while the a single stage may clog with really wet snows, these machines have the weight behind them to just push the snow if necessary. spend thousands on a new ridding lawnmower that is good for nothing other than mowing the lawn, or buy something that can do it all for a whole lot less money. for me the choice is a given. my neighbor spent 1,800 bucks on a new mtd cub cadet than can only mow his lawn. for less than 1,800 bucks i have 2 garden tractor with enough attachments to do everything. i might consider buying some additional attachments for the cub, im even considering buying that qa42 off of craigslist, but i don't really want to spend the money until i have a running cub. hopefully they are available enough that i can find one when i want it.

i love all old classic garden tractors and would own several brands if i had my choice. ih cub, ingersol/case, sears suburban, older mtd garden tractors, simplicity, wheelhorse, ariens, and john deere. they were all well built.

Art, Charlie,

Does anyone out there have any first hand knowledge or opinion on the Onan motor put in the 982. I am just curious what reliablity and power are like.

Charlie,
Many thanks for keeping the show running. It's a great forum.

All,
Yes indeed, the gear grinding on my Original was caused by rusted pressure plates. Paul Bell gets the prize for noting it first. Or was in Mike Essary
