Jason,
I gotta agree with Charlie. Now you need the tri-ribs in the front. Once you have them on you will swear you added power steering.

I agree with Shultzie, put those ribs on front and it really feels like I've got power steering now!

Jason - do you realize the headlight bezel you have is either busted or missing one stud bolt? It's supposed to have 2 studs to hold the backing ring in place. And those backing rings look really nice if ya buff them up a little before installing (once you get your missing bezel and ring). I sure hope you secured your headlight wiring so it won't get burnt up on the muffler or engine. And just in case you need a little help here's a pic of what they should look like on the inside when you're done. Hope you got the wire clips.

Hydro -

The bezel I have had both studs. I removed one stud to find matching size, thread pitch, & length. Haven't spent any time on headlights yet but the bezel I have appears to be in really decent shape. I will need the wire clips also. PO had wires cut just behind grill with wire nuts on them.

So I'll have to spend some time on the whole Headlight Project!

Well Jason - I don't know if mine is 100%
correct police.gif
. In fact, I have to say it's not because I added that wire clip on the center hinge screw. That keeps the wires from falling onto the heat shield when the hood is closed. But the
correct police.gif
may not even know that. Also, just in case you didn't notice, and to make sure the
correct police.gif
don't chime in here, the hinge in the pic is for the QL series and should last a couple life-times. I think you already know the hinge for the 1x8/9 series leaves a lot to be desired.

And one final thing, the screws that hold the bezels to the headlight panel, and the wing nuts that hold backing rings to the bezels are IH specific hardware, WHICH upon close inspection the
correct police.gif
may notice.

Under Edit - hey Jason, even with the dry rot cracks the tires will likely last another 10-15 years. Our Scottish friends on here just install tubes to keep them going.

Jason - well, I don't know about Kentucky, but I've watched the Red Green Show so many times it's just amazing all the uses you can find for duct tape. I guess it was about 10-15 years ago that I came across a set of 6x12 diamond tread rear tires, like some of the early Originals had. I mounted them on some wheels and when I put air in both of them split along the sidewalls. I guess you could say they blew apart. Being I tend to be somewhat thrifty, I was thinking maybe I could put some duct tape on the inside of the tires and install a tube to keep them going - but then I decided, even if I got them to hold air in the tubes, that as soon as I put any weight on the tires they'd probably just split open. Guess I should'a sent it to the Red Green Show as a recommendation for one of their episodes

My 1975 Cub Cadet 1250 has been an extremely reliable tractor over the 18 years that I've owned it, never once breaking down on the job. I've had a few minor issues with the accessories (QA-42A snowthrower) but the tractor has been rock-sold reliable - until yesterday...

In addition to my yard, I mow walking paths for my neighbor – he lets me and my dogs walk his land freely, and I repay him by keeping the paths groomed. Yesterday, while at the furthest distance from my house (about 7/8 of a mile – Murphy’s Law), I hear a POP and the tractor coasts to a stop. I instantly have an infinite range of neutral on the hydro lever! Letting the engine idle and removing the LH side cover, the problem is immediately apparent – engine flex coupling intact and rotating – drive shaft stationary. Upon shutting the engine down, I saw that the spirol pin that couples the driveshaft to the coupling arm was completely missing. Walked back to the house and gathered up a few tools and parts, including a .250” dia. cotter pin that would suffice for the spirol pin, just to get the tractor back to the shop. This worked perfectly – field fix took about 5 minutes and the drive home was uneventful.

Today I installed a new spirol pin which drove in with what felt like the proper amount of resistance. This time though, the pin gets 2 loops of .032 diameter, stainless safety wire, just in case. I thought of using blue Loctite but the safety wire seemed more aircraft-quality. Will see how this works out over the rest of the season. I’ll be keeping an eye on the pin just to make sure no movement takes place. The two pins at the transmission end look centered and no indication of moving but I might safety them too, just for good measure.

Any one else experience the total loss of a spirol pin like this?

David - now that you mention it (total loss of a spirol pin), I don't recall ever having it happen to me on a QL unit. Had the solid pin fall out of some of the earlier series units, basically located in the same place at the front of the drive shaft, but don't ever recall completely loosing a spirol pin.

David, yep, Murphy's Law in action. Very nice fix!
