Look out below, 'cause here we go! Do the Quietlines have an O ring on their drain plug? I'm not used to seeing one on these older tractors here. However, I do have a 149 that was holding engine oil well until I went to change it and found that there was a course thread bolt screwed into the drain hole. I couldn't get lucky enough to use it again and have it still hold oil.

Thanks guys Charlie I believe that is the drain plug I have. Guys I'm just worried something broke or cracked. I appreciate the help.

Ya think? That might be the alternative to pulling an engine to replace or repair the oil pan.

Charlie: My bad. Where'd you find that oil drain plug?
 
Ed- when I first got my 1200 the oilpan had a tiny hairline crack off the drain plug hole. It made for a VERY slow but annoying drip. You could only see it if you wiped the oil off just right... I'm sure these aluminum pans have been abused in some way or another to cause that. Maybe yours has something similar?
 
Ed C - you didn't say how long your Quiet Line 1650 had been sitting not running. I know most everyone else is guessing the drain plug is your problem. The one Charlie posted a pic of does have a gasket (or maybe you call an O-ring). I've actually never seen one used on any of my Cubs. Clark mentions a hairline crack in the pan on his 1200. That is a possibility with a 1650 as well - if the ISO-mounts are shot that whole engine begins to get beat against everything - I believe the ISO-bars can actually hit on the sides of the oil pan. I had a 1200 that actually wore a hole thru the left side panel where the stud on the air cleaner cover hit the panel. But my honest to goodness best guess is gonna be your front crankshaft oil seal let loose - and I say this because you said your 1650 drained all the oil on the ground - which I assume you mean there was a great big spot of oil underneath the engine. If you pulled the dipstick and there was NO OIL then I'm likely wrong, and it is probably your drain plug or a crack in the pan. BUT if you just saw the big spot, and you pull the dipstick and it shows oil, then have a look at the front of the engine at the bottom of the electric PTO. If that area is all wet then it's likely your front crankshaft seal let loose. It's somewhat common on Kohlers, and not really hard to replace. It only throws the oil out when the engine is running and it hits the back of the electric PTO then runs down.
Let us know what you actually figure out. I'd sure like to be the winner of this guessing contest.

Frank C - "coarse thread bolt" huh - I think that's a Mainer thing isn't it? You probably could buy a box of those bolts for the same price as Charlie's drain plug, but then you'd have to use 80W oil so it would trickle slowly around those coarse threads. Ooh, and I assume it wasn't 3 inches long or it would'a broke the dipper off the rod.

Mike C - as long as there are no holes in the wrong places I think your new deck will work out well. The rust on the top side looks like it's still fairly much on the surface. Underneath looks like it's solid just rusty. Sounds like you're gonna go over it, and I'll bet it will work out just fine for ya.

Charlie - I assume someone is testing the strength of the steel in those flat top square fenders by applying 125# on each side (approx). As I recall IH used some pretty good steel in them - they were really tough on those old units (even if they don't belong on a 100). What I don't understand is the bungee cord on the brake pedal and why the headlights are on

Can I vote on the 1650?

I'm going to pick on one of Harry's points. I'm going to bet the ISO mounts are junk and it has worn a spot into the oil pan and finally broke through.

Cause I'm imagining that he used the 1650, came back a few days later and 1.5 QTs of oil was all over the floor.

That doesn't happen with a loose oil plug. Even with 1 full thread hold the drain plug, oil doesn't leave the engine that fast.

As for the 100. Those are some mighty strong fenders, considering they arent even the right ones.

I bet it does awesome wheelies with that blade off of there.
