Thanks to the experts out there got the hydro working correctly. Not sure what happened with charging but was reading couple lines+ on the amp meter, now at zero when running. The starter switch was hanging up and maybe screwed something up with the alt? Am told the alt. is part of the starter? Is a mid 80's 1210.

Mel, 1210 model has a stator & regulator/Rectifier for charging system. You can Check *parts lookup* ^^ above to give a visual look. Amp meter should show a slight + charge when running & more + just after starting.

The charging system on the 1210 is just like a typical Kohler in a CC app. The charging coil is under the flywheel, while the regulator -rectifier is mounted externally.

To check the system, first locate the regulator. It will have 3 wires to it. The outer wires are the AC leads from the alternator. A good system will show +28V AC current at high speed. The center wire is a 12vdc wire that excites the regulator and is the output from it. Therefor the reg/rectifier must be well grounded or it will not work.
These are some simple test methods.

TRhanks again for all your guidance and advice! Allen, I checked the components and couldn't get the lights to work. Found a new ignition switch and everything now works as it should! I think I may have overfilled the hydro unit as the pressure relief valves are weeping. My last obstacle is it starts hard when its cold, does anyone know if there's a way to time the engine?

Mel, in this same section, look at thread 'is there a way to time a Kohler'... got everything you need.
Happy to hear a new switch fixed things.
