Here's the 982 after a bath this morning. I woke up to wet looking weather and figured it wouldn't matter at this point.

As you can see it is missing the foot treads on both sides. Are these treads the same as the older CC treads? It's still on the trailer too because it's easier to work on. I need to replace the fuel lines/filter, get a new breather element, two new spark plugs, and breaker points. I also need to change out the seat. I have a new looking IH seat anyway so that will be corrected. The PO drilled to mount the existing seat and the middle of the seat bracket bent in a bit. I will change that part out too.

I'm getting ready to do a compression test and hope that turns out good.

Wayne S, That looks like a good haul. You will have it fixed up in no time. Good luck with it.

Thanks Melody-

I need all of the luck I can muster.

I plan to get back on it this week but the "domestics" (chores) around the house have gotten behind especially the leaves.

Wayne S. Great catch!!! You'll love it once it is up and running.

How the heck do you do the Points without removing much of the Tin on the engine?
Just seems like you can't get a screwdriver in there with the exhaust manifold covers getting taken off.
Here's my recent Filter/Gas shutoff scenario. Now I can shut off fuel without removing Side panel.

Show a picture of the Breather element when you get it. I get too much oil in the Air cleaner. I'm guessing this new to me machine is missing the Breather that is in the Valve cover so oil sprays up into the air cleaner

The temps were in the 70s here yesterday so I decided to do some work on the 982. I found some loose wires and cleaned a lot of terminals/wires etc. I put in the new oil and oil filter, removed and cleaned the gas tank, replaced the complete fuel line, added a new air filter, cleaned and reset the points (real easy on an Onan), installed two new spark plugs, and put a freshly charged battery in just to find I'm not getting spark.

It's still on the trailer but I'm getting close to having a worker here.

Well, I finally got the 982 off of the trailer and running. I really haven't spent that much time working on it...maybe a couple of hours total. I thought the coil was bad so I've been talking to David Kirk, a real nice guy and he's helped me a bit on checking out my coil situation. Come to find out the coil isn't bad. It ohmed out fine on the primaries but not on the secondary posts so I just assumed it was bad. He instructed me that the primaries were the real test usually and he was right.

After it started I noticed some mouse nest material coming out of many places so I shut it down and spent another hour or so getting that out. I even got what was left of a mouse carcass with all of the nesting. I also found a couple of oily head bolts so the head gaskets will probably need replacing eventually. Once I felt it was clean enough to run I drove it off of the trailer and around the yard for a bit. It sure is different from the one lungers.

This tractor has many issues like the shifter doesn't go all of the way up and reverse is a tad slow. It isn't charging either. Both front tires show it's out of alignment a little but that should be an easy fix. The hydraulics seem to work fine for now. I used a flashlight to find the cam plate with the slot has been welded.

The good news is it didn't smoke one bit even on start up and appears to have good compression. I need this tractor as a worker but I see I will have to come off some bucks before that day arrives. I will probably just split it and go through everything I can when the weather breaks.

At least the paint is good enough to just buff out and go.

Wayne-
I had always heard that the foor treads on SGT's were something completely different than other models. I can't speak for the 982, but my 2072 I found that the treads from the 106-147 models bolt right on.

Although the diamond plate version is favored by many, I kept with he "stock" part. At work I see WAY too much diamond plate, so its a little played out in my world.

Wayne S, Just tinker with it and soon it will be in tip top condition. Good Luck with it.
