My use with Tug is winter snow plowing and driving it half speed, basically load free. No super slow speed/ high RPM garden work where air circulation is critical.
With that in mind, does this K17 really need all those covers? Is this Kohler engine in anything else where it is only cooled by open air and it's Head Fins?
I'll be looking into a probable crank seal leak so the covers will be coming off... Just wondering if I can better monitor the engine from mouse nests and other engine issues that arise if the engine is exposed like most air cooled engines.
I'm guessing this is going to be one of those "what oil is best" questions.
 
On any of the tractors with the enclosed engine bay (Quietline, 82 Series, Cyclops and even newer than those), yes.

All the tins on the engine direct the cooling air in the proper locations. On all these, the fan sucks “cool” air from under the tractor, and inside the dash tower, and blows it forward, across the engine, and out the front grille. This is why all these tractors have some kind of “muffler box” as that directs the air out the front. Without the tins and box, the air just kinda swirled around in there without any direction.

I now that @mgonitzke Matt has made the comment, that when swapping a Command from a newer tractor into the 82 series and maybe the Cyclops, it is very important to make sure the blower housing and “firewall” is sealed well so the engine pulls that cool air from under the tractor and inside the dash tower. If it is not sealed well, it will pull the hot air from around the engine, and can cause the engine to overheat.

We have several Quietlines and an 782, and all of them have all their tins on them. You would be surprised, if you stood in front of one of these, at WOT, how much air actually blows out of the front of the tractor, besides the exhaust…..
 
Another one of those "your results may vary".

You probably will be ok since your engine is not running hard at full throttle in the summer, but as much as those tins are a PITA, I would keep them there for optimal cooling.
