Hi All,
I have an 1863 that is 20 year old this year. I had some slow cranking issues with it all summer. Since the battery was at least 10 years old I got a new Group 26. Replaced it started right up, hasn't cranked that fast in years.
Every since the battery install whenever I use the PTO the AMP/charging light is on.
takes me about 90 minutes to mow, and light never goes out.
When I turn tractor off, and go to restart it no problem, cranks right over and starts great.
Did I get a bad battery?
Or something else wrong.
any and all ideas welcome

Dave

Could be your PTO switch is not dropping the voltage down after it connects . I believe the voltage should drop down to just hold the PTO in gear and this requires less voltage than it will take to get it to connect.

Donald,
Thank you for the information. The PTO switch makes sense since the new battery is putting out more voltage than the old one.
I will order a switch and give that a try.
Also for years I needed to toggle the PTO switch on on off at times to get the motor to crank.

Dave,

Typically it is a faulty voltage sensor #925-3251 that gives these errors. Small round item attaches to frame with one bolt. That also grounds it, so you may have the usual troublesome ground issue with it. Back out the bolt and clean for a good ground and retry. If no change replace it or live with it as is. These were sort of a recurring problem back then.

Two wires attach to it, as I said it is a round piece roughly the size of a quarter or slightly larger maybe 3/4" thick. Often attached to the dash support.

Going to revisit this. Living with this problem for about 6 years, decided to see if I could fix this thing.
I mow for about one hour with out shutting off the PTO. When I turn off the PTO, it will not restart.
Things I have done.
Replaced PTO switch.
Replaced voltage sensor and sanded chassis were it connects.
Removed battery and replaced with freshly charged battery I had for another vehicle.
Any thing else to try before I replace the PTO. Voltage regulator?
