What is the part number for the kit to bush and replace the choke and throttle shafts? Manual talks about it and tells you how to do it but does not give a part #. Can't seem to find it anywhere else. Maybe it's not available anymore?

Thanks,

Jim

Jim - I don't know of a kit to bush the choke shaft. Hopefully you're really just looking for a bushing kit for the throttle shaft.

Charlie at CC Specialties (linked in the colorful boxes at the top of this page) has this bushing kit which is just the bushing and 2 screws.
Throttle shaft Bushing W/ Butterfly screws PN/ KH-25-158-02-S or 25 1587 02S
Throttle shaft Bushing W/ Butterfly screws PN/ KH-25-158-02-S or 25 1587 02 S
$10.00

It looks like he used to have the kits that included the throttle shaft but Charlie shows it with a $0.00 price so it's apparently out of stock and very likely NLA. This is probably the kit you read about in the Kohler Service Manual.

Throttle shaft Repair Kit PN/ Kohler # 25 757 16-S or KH-25-757-16-S
Includes throttle shaft, throttle shaft bushing, installation tool, bowl gasket, bowl baffle gasket, bowl retainer gasket, #2-56 screw, 3 #3-48 screws, and loctite.
$0.00

If you do this be careful taking those screws out of the butterfly. Make sure you use a really good screw driver. Try to tweek the backs with something before attempting removal since they are peened over.

A good hardware store will have 1/4" ID x 7/16" OD thin bronze bushings. Two of those will take the place of what comes in the repair kit. Unless the existing throttle shaft has been bushed once already or is otherwise damaged, there is usually no need to replace the throttle shaft.

There is no kit for the choke shaft. Reworking that is a bit more work. I have the parts to do a few of them here but haven't had time to figure out the process yet. It will basically involve reaming out the bore in the carb body, installing a bushing, and then drilling a clearance hole through the side for the detent ball and spring.

Hey Matt - I haven't been or seen a good (independent) hardware store in years. I know the big box hardware stores don't have them, and even what used to be a big brand (like Ace or True Value) in the last 3 places I lived didn't have them, so can you give us the name of the one you might use?

On the peened throttle screws, gently file the peened side, then carefully attempt to back them out. I do this when rebuilding Rochester Q-Jet 4 barrel carbs with great success.

Here is an available kit:

Back in the '70's I tore through several Q-Jets but never had an issue with the throttle shaft. I thought they were quite easy to put various kits in if you had a good set of instructions and just a little knowledge. Loved that sound and the feel of the secondaries kicking in when you stomped your foot in my Poncho's.

I found them at Menards. I think my local ACE has them as well.
Thanks Matt. I think Menards is pretty much a Midwest area store and your Ace must be a good one. I'll have to check mine again. Maybe they improved.

Menard’s is spreading out their territory just like armadillos are...although they are moving in opposite directions.
