So I just bought my first cub cadet, sadly I only realized recently that it was not a true IH.

I still love it though. It runs pretty good considering it sat in a tractor yard over a year and mowed my 2 acres straight through the first time.

About 1.5 hours in the engine lost its rpms and I had to run it idle in neutral to get it back in rhythm.

Now it does not respond to raising the throttle at all really.

The only repairs that have been made so far is the carburetor has been replaced by the seller. They also put in a new battery.

The PTO switch will not stay on and drops out after a minute or so of mowing. I have a new switch on the way in the mail and for now I am just duct taping it in the on position.

The PTO belt, attached to the J pull/push bar, was so far forward that the wheel for the belt was grinding into the steel plate on the front.

I adjusted it back and now the belt is really floppy, so I am assuming that I will need a new smaller belt.

I am currently trying to locate an owners manual so I can see what the specs are for the belt and compare them to the one I have.

There is this thing that looks real dirty. I am going to start chipping away to see what it is.

Help please! Total newb. First riding lawn mower ever. Thanks.

The brake / clutch does not stop the machine....it just slowly goes forward.....the only way I have found to stop while moving is slowly adjusting it down to neutral and then going into reverse.

Bret, WELCOME!

Sounds like the trunion slot may be worn out. Could also just be that the neutral setting needs to be adjusted. I couldn't find the exact adjustment procedure for the 1282, however, it should be similar to the Quiet Line series which is covered in THIS MANUAL Scroll down to page 81 for the section on "CAM Bracket Adjustment" and that should be a good place to start. For info on the trunion slot check out entry # 14 in the FAQ Also be sure to check out the info in the CubFAQ

Bret, welcome

the 1282 is a fine machine and is a garden tractor

Bret M. WELCOME!!!

With your pto switch not staying engaged. BE CAREFUL by taping it in place. I'd go through the wiring and make sure that something hasn't been rigged so you can keep mowing when you put the tractor into reverse. When I first got my 782D a well meaning mechanic tried a "Hot wire" short cut so I could go in reverse and the mower wouldn't kick out. THAT almost cost me a new PTO cluch. Myron Bounds helped me get onto the right path and now I am quite happy leaving the switch to work as it should and let the mower safety switch kick the mower out of run position when I back up.

AND I agree that a 1282 is one great Cub Cadet.

Bret,
I would lean more towards the pto switch relay than the switch. Both my mtd made tractors(782d and 582s) done the exact same thing. New relay fixed both. The one on the left inside the side shield bolted to the dash. Hope this helps. And I must tell you that I am jealous that you have a 1282. That's the one I am missing to complete my collection of 82 series tractors. Maybe someday. Jim

Brett--Welcome to the Community!!! We all started as a first time GT owner at one point. Many of us weren't lucky enough or smart enough to start with such a solid and neat machine! Study over the FAQ's and browse the CCC/MTD's threads. You can learn a lot here in a short amount of time if you want to. I know I have in the last 5 years. Good luck with your 1282. Be careful though, if you learn too much about these great little machines, you will find it really hard to own just one!

Great machine! I have been through 3 switches now between my 782 and 2072. I agree that it is a poor design. They just won't stay "on" I have zip-ties looped so I can hold the switch up.

And screw not mowing in reverse. Your worried about frying a PTO just leaving it on, but not worried about the wear and tear of it turning on and off over and over and over, likely a near full throttle. Talk about wearing on out. Not to mention the belt has to take that abuse, the mule drive, the deck spindles... No one in their right mind would sit in the driveway and turn the deck on and off that much. Why is it ok to do it in the lawn?

Sorry to high jack the thread.

Again, great tractor!

Nic B. I do agree with you however I should have stated that when I do mow with the 782D I have a nice long and wide area with not too many forward/reverse times.

HEy all....I didn't realize anyone responded :/ until now, because i found my thread looking for a new thread in regards to my current problem.

Thanks for the warm welcome....us cub heads are some nice folks.

The pto issue was actually one of over heating....I installed a new air manifold and muffler, as both were shot....and putting hot air straight down on the electric clutch....

that (pic) thing covered with grime is the hydro filter, and it really surprised me when I changed the oil for the first time and idiotically assumed it was the oil filter....what a mess
happy.gif

Now I know there is no oil filter on my Candy, thats what I call her.....

I put her through some serious abuse....bushhoggin and such.

Now to my current issue.....

I have hit saplings, stumps, you name it....and she just stops dead, and the hydro stops also.

Just last week, my neighbor did not have a pto shaft long enough to hook his bush hog to my MF 165 diesel, so I thought, candy can handle this, and I will just go around the bigger saplings....I needed to clear the brush to get some winter seed out in a new pasture we are going to fence in for our goats.

So I am going along, and suddenly a demon bug, a wasp I know now, stings me in the ear....I flip and throw Candy into full hydro forward....that stump I had been judiciously avoiding square in front of me....I swear, I think the back tires came of the ground....I got ready to put it in reverse, turn the key, anything, and was stung successively more times...i freaked out and jumped ship, with my poor baby head against a stump.....

I returned about 45 seconds later, cursing the bug spirits, and to my despair, Candy would not go forward or backwards.....

Some things to note....

I took her apart a bit, and I noticed that the flywheel does not turn anymore when in forward or reverse, only neutral, and not as fast as I remeber since last time I had to fix a broken piece of metal that pushes the neutral safety switch.

I took off the rear plate, bought the wrong dang gasket, (the right ones coming- parts tree thinks a 1282 has a cast iron rear, they're wrong, its aluminum) and all the parts in the differential housing seem to move just fine.

The fluid level was good....not any gunk at all in there.

The wheels move barely, I assume this is normal, although I have no idea how to get this thing free moving, maybe by removing the two valve nuts on the top of the pump?

Most hydros have a by pass valve lever or something to disengage it....not sure if the hydro here has one or not.

When I really push the rod plate with the spring that connects to the pump to its max the tractor moves very slowly.....

gasket should be here tomorrow....catered a wedding saturday and made some money, found a 682 (YAY!) on CL being sold, trying to get my wife to understand how even if I fix mine, having two is better than one ;)

Any help would be appreciated....

Is it normal for the flywheel to not move when the hydro is engaged?

The tractor always did creep forward in neutral, fast if you were going fast and then pushed the pedal....I have been stopping by bumping it into reverse while going forward to slow down and pushing the clutch pedal while going backwards, only way to stop....

It creeps forward sometimes when you turn the key to start, even with your foot on the clutch.

Thanks again, can't believe I didn't see the response from before, I guess it does not go to my email like I thought it would.

Take care
